Description

Underhill is the more extroverted sibling in the Yarra Yering Shiraz family - generous, expressive and disarmingly drinkable from day one.

Sourced from a single block planted by Dr. Bailey Carrodus in 1973, this eight-acre patch at the western edge of the estate delivers Shiraz with muscle and charm in equal measure. Where Dry Red No. 2 broods, Underhill beams - showing plush dark fruits, cracked pepper, lavender and a whiff of smoked meats, all wrapped up in a supple, silken frame.

Winemaker Sarah Crowe gives this wine a mix of whole bunch and whole berry ferments, time in both large format oak and seasoned puncheons, and a deft handling of tannin that keeps everything in check without dampening the wine’s natural swagger.

Delicious now, especially with a decant, but will cruise gracefully through the next 10–15 years if you can hold off. A benchmark cool-climate Shiraz, straight from one of Australia’s greatest sites.

"It’s all bound by a supple acidity and finely wrought tannins, gentle in their guidance but resolute in their persistence, carrying it for an age to an eventual bright and fresh finish."
- Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

"While this may not quite have the staying power of the previous two vintages, it will still age gracefully for a decade, if not two!"

"A wine that is always on the list of wines to watch in any vintage... Love this wine."
- Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

97 points - "Dense ruby with rich purple tones at the rim. Blueberry, ground cumin and fennel with a touch of reductive lift on the nose. Loaded with blue fruits at the core, intense yet not overbearing. There's layers of cured meats, subtle Sichuan pepper spice and floral lifts along the line with deeper wakame and iodine tones underneath. It’s all bound by a supple acidity and finely wrought tannins, gentle in their guidance but resolute in their persistence, carrying it for an age to an eventual bright and fresh finish." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

97 points "From a shiraz vineyard planted in '73 adjacent to Yarra Yering. 10% whole bunches and matured mainly in puncheons (15% new). Perfumed with aromas of cherry, cassis, a floral nuance and freshly ground black pepper. On the palate this medium-bodied and elegant wine is a little more compact and precise than the Dry Red No. 2. The tannins are superfine and persistent and, while this may not quite have the staying power of the previous two vintages, it will still age gracefully for a decade, if not two!" - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "A wine that is always on the list of wines to watch in any vintage. The vines were planted on this vineyard in 1973. It was whole bunch and whole berry fermented, contributing to the highly perfumed and deeply concentrated palate. It was matured in large format oak to allow the natural vibrancy of the fruit to emerge without the intrusion of too much oak. Love this wine." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

95+ points - "There’s an exaggerated impression of complexity on the nose and yet, on the palate, it’s seamless, effortless and svelte. This is some kind of wine. It’s medium in body but it has its fair share of magic dust. It tastes of red and black cherry, a flash of iodine, redcurrant and peppercorns, sap and herbs, and a variety of nut-like influences. It feels fine, and finessed, and modestly creamy throughout, though the tannin has a tickle of whole bunch to it, and a smoked herb aspect to go with it. It should also be acknowledged that the acidity of this wine has been beautifully judged. Shiraz almost always drinks well from the outset and this wine no doubt will/does as well, but it really begs to be cellared, and it will be at its best with at least a handful of years under its belt. But regardless, this wine is a thing of beauty." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

2018 Yarra Yerring Underhill Shiraz

A superb wine, a classic Shiraz and simply a joy to enjoy

Mixed berry fruits, perfume, graphite in a brooding and mysterious way. Cool climate Shiraz, deliciously medium-bodied. Think cured charcuterie, smoky barrel and aniseed spice. Plum fruit flavours add concentration, layered with liquorice spice, cured meat, and a smoky-char. It’s medium-weighted, driven by fruit purity, with oak a very faint seasoning alongside a subtle stalk grip.

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
