Description

The 2023 release of Yabby Lake’s Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is another striking entry in what’s become a benchmark series for Mornington Peninsula Pinot.

Sourced from select parcels across the estate’s immaculately farmed site - blocks 1, 2, 3 and 5 - this is a wine that walks the line between purity and power with real grace. A cool, late-ripening vintage brought lower yields but excellent fruit, resulting in a wine that’s bright, coiled and humming with energy.

There’s a gentle dusting of whole bunch (10–20%) in the ferment, adding subtle spice and tension to a core of redcurrant, raspberry and floral top notes. The texture is all class - fine, silken tannins and that hallmark Mornington line of acidity give the wine lift and longevity.

It’s already drinking beautifully with a good decant, but will only grow in complexity over the next decade. If you’re a Pinot collector, or simply a lover of fine Australian expressions of the variety, this should be on your radar.

"I thought this was a bit simple at first but it grew and grew and ended up being anything but... In the end this wine’s quality is abundantly clear."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Such lovely composure and a complete wine with all the heady aromas and flavours the variety can muster – roses, dark cherries and pips, wood spices, chinotto and blood orange. The fuller-bodied palate is all about texture, with silky tannins and lithe acidity encompassing a core of ripe, juicy fruit." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "I thought this was a bit simple at first but it grew and grew and ended up being anything but. It tastes of peanut shells and black cherries, cloves and assorted sweet spices, with smoky reduction and twiggy herb-chinotto notes also contributing. It’s one of those wines that tightens as it breathes too. In the end this wine’s quality is abundantly clear." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Our philosophy is to craft single vineyard wines of great purity and character, reflective of our site and the season in which it was grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.

The 2023 season brought 'La Nina' weather conditions for the third year in a row - a cool and late ripening vintage with low yields and superb quality. The 2023 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is an expression of purity and balance. Select parcels were chosen for their concentration and layers of sily tannins.

WINEMAKING
MV6 (40%), G5V15 (40%), Abel (12%), 667 (5%) D4V2 (3%) from blocks 1, 2 5 and 3. The fruit was handpicked between 14 – 20 March, with each parcel handled separately in the winery. Hand sorted and carefully de-stemmed, the whole berries were then transferred to oak fermentation vats for natural fermentation. A small portion (10-20%) of whole bunches were used in 2023. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were transferred to French 500L oak barrels for maturation, 25% of which were new. The wines were left undisturbed until estate bottling in late January 2024.
TASTING NOTE
A bright crimson. Aromas of red fruits - strawberry, raspberry, red currant, coupled with a floral and spicy note. The palate has layers of fine grained and silky tannins. It is intense and full, with layers of flavour and texture leading to a long, lingering finish. Cellar for at least five years, and preferably more than 10.
