Description

Crafted by the talented Angus Vinden, the 2023 Vinden Headcase Semillon stands out in the Vinden range for its exceptional balance of tradition, innovation and deliciousness.

This Semillon comes from the historic Somerset Vineyard in the Hunter Valley, with vines planted by the Howard family in the 1960s, and Angus Vinden bringing new life to this vineyard through organic and regenerative farming practices.

The fruit was hand-picked in early February and fermented on fine solids in stainless steel, a concrete pyramid, and neutral oak, with extended lees contact for added complexity.

The result is a Semillon with complex aromatics of bright citrus and leesy, spicy notes. The palate offers lemon, lime, and wet stone characters, with a crackling acidity. It's textured and weighty yet remains fresh and vibrant profile.

Perfect for enjoying now or for aging, this wine is a must-try for those seeking a fresh take on a Hunter Valley classic.

94 points - "This is a different style of Hunter semillon, with its powerful fruit flavours and ambarella/citrus aromas sitting within a phenolic frame. The grapes are picked slightly later in the season than many other semillons; consequently, the flavours are slightly bolder and the palate weighty, though acidity pleasantly clinches everything in on the close. Being a powerful style, it is highly food-friendly and can handle a significant chill. Fermentation on fine solids occurred in a mix of stainless steel, a concrete pyramid and neutral oak. Extended lees contact helped build texture on the palate. Sourced from the established semillon plantings from the Somerset vineyard planted in 1989 and 1969." - Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Pleasing white

You’d be a headcase if you don’t like this white. Loved it so much after one glass I had to buy the next day.

Sourced from our Somerset Vineyard - the blocks were planted by the Howard family in 1965 & 1969 over fine clay loam soil, the fruit was hand picked in early February. The juice was fermented on fine solids in stainless steel, a concrete pyramid, neutral oak and given extended lees contact to build complexity. The wine shows the character of the old gnarled vines; refreshing natural acidity, citrus fruit, delicate texture & minerality.

Vinden Estate

Angus Vinden, the dynamic young winemaker of Vinden Wines, is redefining this beloved Hunter Valley winery. Taking over from his father a few years ago, Angus has infused fresh energy into the family label, producing exciting, modern wines that are garnering attention from the country's leading wine scribes.

He focuses on the Hunter Valley's classic Semillon and Shiraz, excelling with Tempranillo and even Chenin Blanc while exploring these varieties with a creativity and flair rarely seen in the region. Angus expanded the estate with the purchase of the historic Somerset Vineyard, a vineyard with a storied past, having provided the fruit for some of the region’s most acclaimed wines over the last 50+ years. It is a very good thing for the region that this iconic site is now in Gus' hands.

Vinden Wines is a vibrant blend of tradition and innovation, making it hands down one of the Hunter Valley's most exciting up-and-coming labels.
