Description

Tessa and Jeremy at Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown have never been afraid of a pivot, but May 2023 forced their hand. Facing their coldest and latest harvest ever, the Beechworth Nebbiolo fruit was sitting low in sugar while the vine leaves were literally dropping off around it. Instead of forcing a still red from a freezing season, they took inspiration from the extreme alpine sparklers of Valtellina and went down the traditional method sparkling route.

The wine spent two years on lees in bottle, and the gamble paid off beautifully. It pours a fascinating shade that sits somewhere between a pale copper and burnished pewter, totally defying standard rose descriptions.

Drinking this from a proper white wine glass reveals an expansive, texturally rich profile. It trades on a plush, yeasty weight that carries soft, muddled red berries and a distinctly savoury, sub-alpine framework. It’s an electric, bone-dry fizz that shows the variety through an entirely different prism. We've tracked their Beechworth experiments since day one, and this might be their most inspired MacGyver moment yet.

2023 was our coldest and latest harvest to date, and when the month ticked over into May, the Thorley Nebbiolo was 11 baume and the leaves were yellow and starting to fall, so we had a decision to make. We had tried a few Italian traditional method Nebbiolo from producers like Erpacrife and Rainoldi in Valtellina, and so we set about making this gorgeous, clean and concentrated fruit into an electric sparkling wine. It’s not quite a rose colour and not quite pewter either, and is all of the creamy red fruits with two years on lees in bottle. Drink it in a big wine glass and delight in Nebbiolo refracted through a different lens.

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
