Description

This is classic Dom Torzi - straight-shooting Shiraz from cool-climate Eden Valley, made with care but never overworked. The 2023 comes off a single vineyard at Mt McKenzie, grown on schist-laced soils and farmed the old-fashioned way: low yields, compost, no nonsense.

It’s essentially the younger sibling to the Frost Dodger Shiraz, using the same fruit (minus the dried portion), aged in ex-Frost Dodger barrels with a splash of new French oak. Fermented wild in open vats with a bit of whole bunch, basket pressed, and bottled without fining or filtration.

The result? Bold Barossa flavour with Eden Valley lift. Dark fruit, spice, and just the right amount of richness - nothing over the top. The tannins are soft, the palate’s full, and it all finishes clean. No tricks, just a solid, great-value Shiraz that overdelivers year after year.

91 points
"Cherry, plum, a little nutty, herb and dried flower perfume, brown spices... a juicy nutty finish of good length."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

91 points - "Cherry, plum, a little nutty, herb and dried flower perfume, brown spices. It’s medium to full-bodied, a little mulchy and autumnal, though in a nice way, a light grainy grip to tannin, with a juicy nutty finish of good length. Shows the cooler vintage with its spicy tangy character, though I like that for its point of difference." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Vintage
A lovely mild vintage for the Barossa allowed flavours to build slowly with excellent acid retention, resulting in fruit of deep, complex character. The 2023 release is rich and plump with dark cherries, plum and chocolate notes. The full palate follows through from the aromatics, finishing with velvety tannins. A beautifully complex and flavourful Shiraz.

Winemaking
Shiraz fruit was gently destemmed (including 10% whole bunch) into open-top milk vats, fermented warm naturally, and basket pressed to barrel to complete fermentation. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Expect all that this label represents—wine enjoyment!

Torzi Matthews

Some years back, noted Australian wine writer Philip White called Domenic Torzi 'Australia's Best Bargain Winemaker'. Today, that statement still could not be more accurate.

The wines from Dom Torzi and Tracy Matthews are some of the best buys in the Barossa Valley and the country. Alongside their excellent classic range of old vine Barossa Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling, they make a small amount of fascinating Italian variety wines, inspired by their Italian heritage.

At every price point, these wines hugely and consistently overdeliver and are simply a must-buy for any lover of honest, delicious Barossan wines.

"You’d have to put Dom Torzi’s Torzi Matthews wines into the ‘some of best value/most consistent wines in the country’ list, right near the shiny top. A touch of magic. An eye on drinkability. Considered vineyard sources. Gentle overlay of winemaking. He gets it. Really gets it." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
