Description

The 2023 Torzi Matthews Old Vines G.S.M. is a beautifully crafted blend of Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro, sourced from two remarkable old vine Barossa vineyards—one established in Rowland Flat in 1914 and the other in Angaston in 1932.

These dry-grown, bush-trained vines produce fruit of exceptional depth and character, thriving in sandy loam soils over ironstone shale at elevations of 295–395 metres. Winemaker Domenic Torzi employs a mix of whole berries and 25% whole bunch fermentation in small open-top fermenters, followed by gentle basket pressing into seasoned French oak barrels for maturation.

The result is a vibrant and expressive G.S.M., with layers of florals, fresh herbs, and juicy red fruit shining through. A touch of savoury complexity—think dried herbs and leather—adds intrigue to its supple, fleshy palate.

This wine epitomises the incredible value that Torzi Matthews is known for, offering a polished yet approachable style that overdelivers for its price point. Perfect for casual gatherings or laid-back meals, it’s a standout example of why the Barossa remains a benchmark for G.S.M. blends.

"Raspberry, cocoa, some liquorice, rhubarb, something floral too, like dried roses. It’s a supple and juicy wine, a smattering of dried herb and new leather adds a savoury component, and the finish is fleshy and somewhat stony, and offers excellent length. Very good and something of a bargain with it."

Torzi Matthews

Some years back, noted Australian wine writer Philip White called Domenic Torzi 'Australia's Best Bargain Winemaker'. Today, that statement still could not be more accurate.

The wines from Dom Torzi and Tracy Matthews are some of the best buys in the Barossa Valley and the country. Alongside their excellent classic range of old vine Barossa Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling, they make a small amount of fascinating Italian variety wines, inspired by their Italian heritage.

At every price point, these wines hugely and consistently overdeliver and are simply a must-buy for any lover of honest, delicious Barossan wines.

"You’d have to put Dom Torzi’s Torzi Matthews wines into the ‘some of best value/most consistent wines in the country’ list, right near the shiny top. A touch of magic. An eye on drinkability. Considered vineyard sources. Gentle overlay of winemaking. He gets it. Really gets it." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
