Description

Topper’s Mountain is doing things differently up in the New England high country, and their Gewürz has effectively become their flagship wine.

Sitting nearly 900 metres up on volcanic soils, Mark Kirkby and the team have found a spot where this variety can actually keep its cool, producing a wine that’s far more interesting than the overripe, soapy styles you might have tried before.

It's handled with a real 'minimal intervention' mindset - wild fermented in a mix of old barrels and ceramic eggs, then left on lees for eight months. It’s bottled without fining or filtration, which keeps all that hard-earned texture intact.

Instead of the typical floral explosion, this leans into a more rugged, botanical spectrum. Think preserved citrus and a distinct forest-floor woodiness, backed by a cool herbaceousness and a waxy, honeyed depth. If you want a white wine with character and story, this is an absolute standout.

95 points "Exceptional wine. So much spice, exotic in nature... Lighter weight texture than one would expect, crispness too... Extreme persistence. Outstanding." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

95 points - "One could reason the gewurz has been regarded as the flagship white for Topper’s, which makes for a distinction. The whole range follows suite with a derring-do to push forward with just about all varieties a side step from the norm, and alternative vessels in winery.

Exceptional wine. So much spice, exotic in nature, a kin with white vermouth almost, yet gentle, subtle honeyed sweeteness too. Ripe lime, a lick of truffle, some sage leaf, a bit of pine needle and some alpine herbs in the mix too. Lighter weight texture than one would expect, crispness too, yet that suggestion of breathiness that some good gewurz hold true. Extreme persistence. Outstanding. Such character and deliciousness." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

The high elevation of our vineyard allows us to achieve an ideal balance between freshness and the rich flavor intensity of this bone dry, textural Gewurztraminer.

Handpicked and whole bunch pressed. Spontaneously fermented in old barrels and ceramic eggs. Eight months maturation on fine lees. Bottled without fining and filtration. Minimal intervention winemaking!
