Description

Tim Smith has carved out a reputation as one of the Barossa’s finest modern winemakers, and his Mataro has become something of a cult favourite in the range. He works with some of the region’s oldest sites, and the low-yielding vines give the fruit real concentration without losing the grape’s natural earthy edge.

The 2023 vintage is all about balance – it was a relatively mild year in the Barossa, and Mataro handled the conditions beautifully. This wine has that classic dark fruit, spice and savoury thread the variety is known for, but here it’s wrapped in silky tannins and a freshness that makes it surprisingly versatile. There’s structure for aging if you want to tuck it away, but it’s also supple enough to drink now.

What stands out is how unforced it feels – a proper reflection of old vines and thoughtful winemaking rather than anything flashy. If you’re looking to understand why Mataro deserves a place alongside Shiraz and Grenache in the Barossa story, this is a great place to start.

"It’s an excellent wine from every angle."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Old vine mataro (the majority from an 150-year-old block) from Kalimna in the north of the Barossa. '23 presents a slightly cooler year and there is a denser spice presence felt in this wine. Meaty dark and black berry fruits on a bed of garrigue, turned earth, pressed purple flowers, dried citrus peel, pastis, dried meats and spice. Quite elemental and concentrated with fine, compact tannins and a sense of latent power as it trails off." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "First impression was that this is an incredibly svelte Barossa red wine. Second impression was that it’s a wine of noteworthy character. That’s a combination for you. Red and black berries, rust, aromatic herbs, graphite and a gentle (gentle) Campari note, the latter slightly different from the aforementioned aromatic herbs. Don’t ask me how, it just is; it sits beneath. The rusty herb aromas here lead to a beautifully fluid, mouthwatering, fine-grained, medium-in-weight palate. It’s an excellent wine from every angle. Deft." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

What a wonderful wine. Loved the MGS too. Tim Smith wines fly under the radar a bit but are very good value for money.

The best Mataro have ever tasted!

A truly excellent example of this relatively uncommon variety, at least in my part of the world. However, it is a superb example of how mataro/mourvèdre can produce a high quality wine, in the right hands of course.

A blend of usually two vineyards from the floor of the Barossa Valley, one of them around 140 years of age, the other about 70 years of age. I age my Mataro in larger format older French barrels – usually 500 litre puncheons to slow down the maturation and decrease the oak influence.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
