Description

The Gathering Field Pinot Noir comes off select east-facing blocks at Thousand Candles - some of the most thoughtfully farmed vines in the Yarra Valley. Stuart Proud, who manages both the vineyard and the winemaking, is known for his deep commitment to biological farming and it shows here in spades: the fruit is pristine, the tannins are fine, and the vineyard character hums through every sip.

The winemaking is low-intervention - small-batch fermentations, a touch of whole bunch, minimal plunging, and older oak. Nothing is overdone, and that’s the point. It’s light in colour but not in presence, with red fruit and spice running through a savoury, structured palate. Everything’s in place, just dialled in quietly.

There’s an effortless quality to this Pinot - it doesn’t shout, but it doesn’t need to.

"Red fruits, gentle florals and spice… Medium-bodied, poised and energetic with balance and drinkability. A delicious, well-priced Pinot to enjoy over 3–4 years."

95 points - "20–30% whole bunches and matured in older barriques and hogsheads. A light, bright ruby red. Poised and nicely defined aromas of red fruits, gentle florals and a little spice. It's a touch closed, in a good way, on the medium-bodied, energetic and very well-balanced palate. A quite delicious and well-priced wine to drink over the next three to four years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

92 points - "There’s lovely fruit here. And excellent varietal character. It ranks high for drinkability but it brings a bit of integrity to the table too, or an impression of it at least. Red and black cherries, roasted meats, sweet spices and a modest autumnal note. It feels polished. There’s a fraction of volatility but it feels cohesive, and it’s not sour. This is quality Pinot Noir fruit." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

    Amazing Pinot

One of the best pinots I’ve tasted for the price. It’s smooth, rich and juicy. Different and more complex than other Yarra valley pinots.

Hand picked fruit from select parcels from our best blocks. The blocks have an easterly aspect that enables them to avoid harsh afternoon sun. Picked early in the morning, hand sorted, destemmed and fermented in small batches.

Fermented over two weeks with minimal intervention. Wines were pumped over at the start and end and only some gentle plunging towards the end of ferment. This allows the wines to retain purity of fruit and better reflect the vineyards they were grown in. After 6 months in older French barriques and hogsheads the wine was bottled with minimal sulphites added.

The wine has aromas of red fruits, cherries and floral notes. An earthy palate with an undertow of dusty cherries, red berries and pomegranate. Some fine velvety tannins and bright acid make this a savoury and structural wine.
