Description

Andrew Thomas' flagship Kiss Shiraz comes from the low-cropping Pokolbin Estate vineyard, planted in 1969, and has been amongst the Hunter's finest Shiraz wines for many years.

As always, the 2023 vintage saw meticulous crop thinning and careful hand-picking. After a 24-hour cold soak and eight-day fermentation on skins, the wine aged for 16 months in premium French oak hogsheads, 20% of which were new.

The nose is full of ripe dark fruits, sarsaparilla, and warm spices. On the palate, find a myriad of black, blue and purple fruits, complemented by fine tannins and crisp acidity. Hints of black pepper, tea smoke, and espresso add complexity.

With a suite of strong reviews, this is an excellent release of Kiss and sadly, it will also be the last, making it and a must-try for fans of premium Aussie Shiraz.

Any joy to be had at pronouncing this as possibly the best Kiss Andrew Thomas has ever made is deflated by knowing it’s his last. The vineyard has been bulldozed to make way for a housing development that’s sold, seemingly without irony, as an opportunity to live the good life surrounded by vineyards. The number of places that can produce wine like this, where good seasons deliver fruit of complexity and depth with the balance that will see them live for years, is finite. Make sure you linger over this last Kiss.

Our flagship single vineyard Shiraz has become a modern benchmark for the Hunter Valley.

This wine clearly demonstrates that Hunter Shiraz can achieve amazing intensity and concentration, all within a medium weight frame.

This is genuinely world class Shiraz

Thomas Wines

Andrew Thomas is a modern-day legend in the Hunter Valley, crafting some of the region's greatest wines for over three decades. His personal label is regarded as a benchmark winery, with a focus on premium Shiraz and Semillon— the Hunter Valley's hero varieties. Thomas has access to some of the region’s best vineyards, allowing him to create wines that truly capture the essence of the Hunter.

Originally from McLaren Vale, Thommo moved to the Hunter Valley to join the winemaking team at Tyrrell's Wines. After 13 years, he ventured out to develop his own label, making single-vineyard wines that highlight the subtle differences between Hunter’s subregions.

Thomas Wines is known for its classic Hunter Valley Shiraz and Semillon, but it also occasionally explores innovative styles without compromising on value. The white wines are delicate and cellar-worthy, while the reds are full-bodied and classic in the best sense of the word, making them one of the benchmarks for modern Hunter Shiraz.

A mentor to much of the next generation of Hunter producers, if you want to try the essence of the Hunter Valley, Thommo's wines are a must-try.
