Description

Pete Schell has a real knack for showing a different side of the Barossa. While the region is famous for high-octane Shiraz, this Syrah is all about elegance and perfume. It’s essentially the lighter, more floral sibling to his bolder reds, sourced from about ten different plots across both the Barossa and the higher, cooler sites of the Eden Valley.

The vines range from 25 to 100 years old, but Pete picks the fruit a bit earlier to keep that bright, crunchy energy. In the cellar, he uses a mix of stainless steel, concrete, and large seasoned oak to let the wine breathe. He's always said it's far easier to overdo it than underdo it in the Barossa, so he takes a back seat here.

The 2023 is exactly what you want from this style - it’s savoury and lifted, full of dark berries, cracked pepper, and a bit of earthy spice. It’s got these fine, sinewy tannins and a fresh hit of acidity that makes it incredibly moreish.

If you’re after a Barossa red that feels sophisticated rather than heavy, this is the one. It’s stellar value for a wine with this much pedigree behind it and one of our go-to reds of the Barossa.

This is Pete Schell’s higher-toned, red-fruited and more floral expression of the Barossa—a yin to Bête Noir’s yang, you could say. To this end, Schell sources from up to 10 different plots throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys from “generally higher, cooler sites, where earlier harvesting gives wines with bright, savoury, spicy fruit expression and a textural freshness”, according to Schell. Vine ages vary from 25 to 100 years.

As with most of his reds, Schell employed various techniques, with different proportions of bunches and berries. Soft extraction was the aim, and the ferments were allowed to relax with little agitation. Pete sums up the reasoning behind his gentle approach simply: “It’s easier to overdo it than underdo it in the Barossa.” Short macerations were followed by ferments in stainless steel, concrete and mostly large, seasoned oak for eight months. It’s another deeply cast yet remarkably elegant Barossa red from this master of balance. Dark fruits, spice, earth and meat are matched by vibrant acidity and fine, sinewy tannins. Terrific value as per!

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.
