Description

The Shaw + Smith team practically defined modern Adelaide Hills Shiraz, proving decades ago that this cool region could deliver incredible elegance without the heavy, jammy weight of the warmer valleys. This 2023 release is a benchmark example of that style, shaped by a late, chilly La Niña season that kept the fruit exceptionally vibrant.

It is a medium-bodied red that focuses entirely on freshness rather than raw power. The wine opens with a fragrant mix of dark forest berries and a distinct crack of spice, backed by a really appealing rustic edge.

It flows smoothly across the palate while carrying excellent structure. The mid-palate has plenty of plushness, but it's reined in by dusty tannins and a bright lick of acidity that cleans up the finish.

All class as always!

"Charm and elegance with enough savoury mettle to elevate the wine to the next level. It's a beauty."

"The epitome of cool climate Shiraz style: medium bodied, a spicy delight, flows smoothly and leaves a lasting impression."
- Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "A beautiful, effortless wine that meshes sweet spice, alpine herbal lift and fragrance, gentle game meat savouriness, well-judged woody spice seasoning and a fruit profile that runs through mulberry/boysenberry through to tart red berries. All of this is in a pitch-perfect, medium-weight frame. Tannins are lithe, gently dusty, cinching the wine and drawing it to a long, fine trail of spice that lingers with appealing sweetness and piquancy. Charm and elegance with enough savoury mettle to elevate the wine to the next level. It's a beauty." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

95 points - "The epitome of cool climate Shiraz style: medium bodied, a spicy delight, flows smoothly and leaves a lasting impression. Moves briskly, too, and with focus zeroing in on black cherry, plum and dried cranberry fruits spiced up no end in pepper-berry, black pepper, dark spices, dusty cocoa and herbs that come alive on the tastebuds. The producer was an early promoter of Adelaide Hills Shiraz and gets to the heart of what is so good about the style, keeping oak maturation in the background and allowing the fruit to sing, aided and abetted by a bright acidity and fine knit tannins. Hints of a black olive savouriness add to the excitement factor – which is already running high – and help close this smart, super elegant Shiraz." - Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

94 points - "It’s a very good wine. Deeply savoury and ‘bunchy’ but flooded with sweet fruit as well. A trio of peppers: bell pepper, peppercorn and black pepper flavours run through black cherry, plum, smoked meat and undergrowth. There’s a touch of gum leaf as well, but minor. If you like a cooler, more herbal expression of shiraz you will love this." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

Style

Shaw + Smith Shiraz is a medium bodied cool-climate Shiraz, in which balance is more important than power.
A wine with freshness and lift, and some luscious fruit as well. There’s a combination of red and blue fruits, a touch of white pepper, and good grippy tannins framing the midweight palate. From a cool La Niña season, this Shiraz delivers brightness and vibrancy with ripe fruit and structure that makes it very complete and delicious cool climate Shiraz.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
