Description

The Smart Vineyard sits high in Clarendon, where McLaren Vale starts to thin out into cooler, windier hills. These dry-grown bush vines were planted by the late Bernie Smart almost seventy years ago, rooted in ancient siltstone soils that have been around for a casual 750 million years. Steve Pannell has worked with this site for years, and it’s become one of his benchmark single-vineyard wines – a pure, structured expression of old-vine Grenache.

The 2023 season was a long, cool La Niña year that pushed picking three weeks later than usual. Yields were tiny, but the long hang time built intensity and tannin definition. The fruit was hand-picked, fermented in old oak with daily pumpovers, then settled and aged in seasoned puncheons. No fining, no additions – just fruit, site and patience.

The wine has real presence. Deep colour, a lifted nose of red fruits, spice and dried herbs, and a palate that’s silky but firm, layered and long. There’s energy, savouriness and depth in equal measure – a sign of both the site and the steady hand guiding it.

"This is incredibly silky and seamless, with notes of sweet pouch tobacco, pomegranate molasses, raspberry/rhubarb and paprika dolce tannins. The texture here is like Dutch cocoa..."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "The 2023 Smart Grenache was significantly lower in yield (less than half) than the normal. The color in the glass, when poured side by side with the 2022, is far darker. The seasons were very different, and the 2023 here smells as if it's been turbocharged. It is supple, svelte, concentrated and almost plush. The palate shows the same. This is incredibly silky and seamless, with notes of sweet pouch tobacco, pomegranate molasses, raspberry/rhubarb and paprika dolce tannins. The texture here is like Dutch cocoa—super fine and gritty without being gravelly or blunt. This is super. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "From 68-year-old vines in Clarendon, with the wine dedicated to the man who planted and farmed them, the much-loved and missed Bernard Smart. The Smart wine is always elegant, and that follows here, though it has plenty of stuffing considering it was a very cool season. Perhaps, I overuse the word savoury, but here we are again. It’s true across the impeccable single-site trio. This needs air, which sees an unfurling of exotic spices, rosewater, musk and dried orange peel notes, more moody than heady, the fruit flavour red but also tartly black fruited, with some sour black cherry notes, along with black tea and bergamot, even a scent of star anise. The tannins incisive, resolute but not demanding; the wine, another triumph." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Vibrant and perfumed, with aromas of wild blackberries, dark cherries, dried strawberries, cassia bark and citrus peel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a generous texture. Flavors of boysenberries, rose petals, brambleberries and spices in the finish. Refined, pure and polished, coming from dry-grown, 68-year-old bush vines. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

Exquisite, top order Grenache

The perfumed, raspberry sorbet nose captivated me instantly, the precision-tension palate confirmed the deal. Overshadowed the excellent MacDonald’s Grenache.

This is divine!

The nose is gorgeously Grenache, so bright to the eye and on the palate; the cooler (higher grown) fruit is perfectly just-ripe, not in the often overdone style of the Vale, the tannin/acid balance is fine and the finish is long and lush .. this wine sings its quality.
A very cautious spender, I dropped the money on the table for this one without hesitation. Want something special? This is it!

2023 Vintage
As with the preceding year, 2023 was a La Niña season—challenging from the outset and resulting in one of the latest harvests on record, with small yields. The long hang times encouraged excellent tannin development and balance.

Winemaking
The fruit was hand-harvested on 11 April—three weeks later than in 2022—and delicately crushed. Fermentation took place in an old French oak fermenter with daily pumpovers. After nine days on skins, the wine was gently pressed and settled in tank for six days before being transferred to old French oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation and extended maturation. It was racked once and bottled without fining, additions, or adjustments on 19 March 2024.

Tasting Note
“Tetrahedrons joined across the palate to tickle all corners. The texture appears to be delicate and breakable, but is actually strong and supportive. The flavours slide across the palate and carry the aromatics. Singular, medium-bodied and contradictory.”
– Stephen Pannell

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
