Description

It was only a matter of time before the Mediterranean master that is Steve Pannell delivered a Fiano. And surprise surprise, it's another beauty.

Steve explains the variety's suitability to our climate, "As one of Italy's oldest cultivars, Fiano is at home in Campania but can also be found in Basilicata and Sardinia, Italy. The proximity to the coast and warm dry summers of these regions bear a striking similarity Langhorne Creek as well as McLaren Vale."

It's a soft-hearted little number, with a suite juicy tropical fruits and the variety's classic waxy texture. Not complex but juicy and delicious!

McLaren Vale is making its mark in the wine world by pushing boundaries with Mediterranean varieties and creating wines which meet new demands. Finding white varieties suited to the Mediterranean climate has always been one of the greatest challenges and with Fiano that
challenge is being met. As one of Italy’s oldest cultivars, Fiano is at home in Campania but can also be found in Basilicata and Sardinia, Italy. The proximity to the coast and warm dry summers of these regions bear a striking similarity to McLaren Vale. Named for Fiona Pannell, known to her friends as Fi Fi and the driving force behind Pannell
Enoteca. In Stephen's words, "a wine that gives praise and thanks to the siren song that makes life complete."

THE VINTAGE

The third year of the current LaNina cycle was cool and wet, leading to the most challenging growing season in living memory. High winter rainfall continued through spring delaying budburst and shoot growth. Unusual soil moisture made spraying and mid-row management a challenge. Thankfully, a dry mild summer followed, but the die was cast, and harvest was one of the latest on record. Low crops with long hang times are not common, however, these contradictory conditions did result in elegance and great flavour. A year that relied on attention to detail in vineyard to make great wine.

WINEMAKING

Variety: 100% Fiano
Vineyard: Block 10 Olivers Vineyard, McLaren Vale
Process: Harvested on the 20th of March, the latest we’ve ever picked Fiano! Settled as cold juice for 10 days, 80% fermented in oak vat and puncheon and 20% in stainless steel. The oak portion kept in oak for a further 8 weeks maturation before blending prior to bottling. Bottled late July.

Alcohol 13%
Ph 3.42
TA 5.8

FLAVOUR PROFILE:

Starts with what we’d expect from McLaren Vale Fiano: white nectarine, jasmine tea, pink grapefruit, makrut lime, white currant and elderflower. Unexpected are more exotic aromas and flavours that appear with air: lemongrass, galangal, honeysuckle and loquat. A level up in complexity and interest from previous vintages. Structure & Texture The entry is all enveloping like a full tide entering a small harbour before channelling energy through the centre and crashing against a break wall. Waves of flavour and paper-like texture resulting in a wine of great poise. Should be drunk in sight of the ocean but maybe with a white
tablecloth rather than a picnic rug.

CELLARING:

Hard to say but the line, length and body tends to a longer life than first suspected. Drink
one today and if you can resist save one for 12 months’ time.

SERVING:

Such a rarity in our part of the world; a white wine from a warm region, worth drinking. Serve with Fiona’s favourite summer dish: Blue Swimmer Crab Linguine.

S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
