Description

The Dead End Tempranillo is a juicy, medium-bodied red that is yet another case in point the mastery of one of Australia’s most forward-thinking winemakers, the peerless S.C. Pannell. Sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, where Spanish varietals thrive, this wine is a perfect match for our warm Aussie climate and modern food culture.

Bright aromas of cherry compote, sarsaparilla, and cola leap from the glass, with hints of lilac, marjoram, and earthy undertones adding complexity. On the palate, it’s all about juicy red fruits with a subtle savoury edge. The tannins playfully tug at the flavours, delivering a dynamic mouthfeel that’s both refreshing and full of character.

A staple of the S.C. Pannell range, Dead End Tempranillo is designed for immediate enjoyment but has enough structure to develop in the bottle. If you’ve loved the award-winning Tempranillo Touriga, this one will be right up your alley - an easy-going yet deeply satisfying wine perfect for any occasion.

"Tempranillo is a distinctive variety, especially when made in a bright and unadorned fashion, such as here... It’s a riot of flavour, juicy and lively, then the classic tannins kick in, bold and dusty, but aligned with fruit, the finish savoury and vibrant, intended for the table."

93 points - "Tempranillo is a distinctive variety, especially when made in a bright and unadorned fashion, such as here. Cherry cola, chinotto, sarsaparilla, blackberry pastille, black jellybean, violet and iris, the palate swelling with fresh raspberry and raspberry jube – not too confected, but hinting in that direction. It’s a riot of flavour, juicy and lively, then the classic tannins kick in, bold and dusty, but aligned with fruit, the finish savoury and vibrant, intended for the table." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

Customer Reviews

We are fortunate to work with clever growers who saw the potential of Iberian varieties in McLaren Vale long ago.

The vineyards we work with are now over twenty years old and prove themselves every year with consistent quality.

The flavours and balance in the fruit inspired us to further our pursuit of Tempranillo and to plant in our Koomilya vineyard at the 'Dead End' of Amery Rd. The vines are now eight years old and form a significant part of the final blend.Iberian varieties are ideally suited to the McLaren Vale climate and this wine continues to be a perfect example of what’s possible.

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate. They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
