Description

Mature Vine is Rippon’s truest voice – drawn from all the fully established Pinot blocks across the estate, many planted on their own roots back in the 80s and 90s. The vineyard spills down a north-facing slope above Lake Wānaka, where schist and glacial gravels shape wines that always carry a hum of the land beneath them.

One of the most powerful Pinots in the Southern Hemisphere, the Rippon is a wine ripped with tannin and structure. It's a savoury style of Pinot and always so honestly put together by Nick Mills and team.

This release has that familiar Rippon clarity – pure red fruit, herbal edge, a mineral frame that keeps it all in focus. It’s not trying to impress, just to express. Drink it young for energy and perfume, or let it sit a few years and watch the detail unfold.

"Wonderfully ripe strawberries and flowers... It’s medium-bodied with firm, lightly chewy tannins that are velvety yet crunchy at the same time."

"This is super, superb. It is creamy in its way. It is ripe, but the fruit is evidently in excellent condition."

"Such a lovely wine with detail and clarity to burn. Drink to 2041."

97 points - Wonderfully ripe strawberries and flowers with hints of balsamic and cloves as well as smoke, lead pencil and oyster shells. It’s medium-bodied with firm, lightly chewy tannins that are velvety yet crunchy at the same time. Tight at the end. Needs three or four years to soften. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - James Suckling

95 points - "The 2023 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir leads with cranberry and cherry, paprika, blood plum and orange. In the mouth, the wine is chalky and lean, persistent and long through the finish. I do love the texture and shape of these Rippon Pinots. The way they behave on the palate tends to convince me further, over the course of drinking, of just how delicious they are. There are notes of rose petals, crushed rocks, black tea and coastal sage. This is super, superb. It is creamy in its way. It is ripe, but the fruit is evidently in excellent condition. It was handpicked from biodynamically farmed vines, wild fermented and cellared in barrel for two winters prior to bottling, unfined and unfiltered. Drink to 2038." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

95 points - "Granted a moment of custodianship, the primary interest of all who work and live at Rippon is to do justice to this remarkable piece of land.” And that is Rippon in Lake Wanaka, with a simple, yet deeply complex commitment to their land that translates into a wine where delicate purity, lifted fragrance (thanks to a whiff of VA and juiciness), measured minerality, detailed gravelly tannins, and depth of flavours all travel on the same frequency. While the nose is not immediate, alluding to a delicate, old-world style, the palate reveals the true nature of a Central Otago Pinot that is not yet done—one that demands all the time necessary to unfold its whole essence, indifferent to the fleeting fashions of immediacy and instantly likable style." - Lisa Cardelli (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "I love the estate’s description of this wine, 'The farm voice of a distinct parcel of land'. Deep ruby with deep plum, wild strawberry and dark cherry fruits, exuberant and fruit-forward in nature with hints of brown spice, cocoa nibs, citrus blossom and dried rinds, schist, crushed rock. Mountain herbs and dried meats. Plenty of fruit depth and intensity, while retaining a sense of freshness and juicy vibes, with a toothsome, rocky tannin array and bright acidity. Such a lovely wine with detail and clarity to burn. Drink to 2041." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "Packed with flavour: equal parts of fruit—from raspberry to black cherry—and secondary complexity in the form of seed spice, tea leaves and black olive. The concentrated palate is weighty and evolves nicely from start to finish, moving through layers of earthy, mineral, savoury. The notable structure is submerged under the fruit density and will continue to evolve in bottle. Drink to 2037." - Stephen Wong (The Real Review)

Customer Reviews

The farm voice of a distinct parcel of land: Rippon. On the western board of Roy’s Bay, Lake Wānaka, Rippon’s north-facing escarpment forms the meeting point of terminal moraines and coarse gravels, all based in schist, on which some of the region’s earliest vines were planted. Rippon is a wine issued from all of the fully developed Pinot Noir vines growing in this land.

Rippon

Rippon Vineyard is one of the most breathtaking sites in Central Otago.

For over a century the Mills family has farmed this small patch of earth on the banks of Lake Wanaka. Nick Mills is the fourth generation of his family to walk the rows on Rippon. He now farms the site according to biodynamic principles.

The Mills family and Rippon are intrinsically linked. There's a deep connection to the land which Nick translates into their superlative wines.

Pinot Noir, Gamay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer all excel at Rippon. The wines are made with patience and love.

In the wines of Rippon, you can sense everything that is transcendent about terroir-driven winemaking where the story of a place is told through the wines it produces.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
