Description

Rippon sits right above Lake Wanaka, a patch of land the Mills family has been working for over 100 years. These days it’s Nick Mills calling the shots, farming the place biodynamically and letting each variety do its own thing. Gewurztraminer has been here a long time, slowly finding its feet and turning into something pretty different to the big, aromatic styles you often see.

2023 was a cracking year for it. The fruit came in from older vines, got a slow, gentle press, wild ferment and plenty of time on lees. That tames the louder floral notes and builds a bit more texture and savoury depth, so it’s not just all perfume.

What you get is a wine that’s layered, a bit spicy, and has this quiet persistence that hangs around after each sip. It’s one you could drink now, but it’s got the bones to age nicely too.

"Exotic notes of coriander seed, nutmeg, curry, leather and earth unfold from this quite singularly aromatic wine before revealing green tropical aromas of ambarella and a hint of lanolin. The palate is equally confounding, with an almost Vouvray-like balance between minerality, beeswax, grapefruit and ginger before sweet mango flavours take over on the lusciously off-dry finish, all held within chewy basket of earthy, spicy tannins. Quite unlike any other gewürztraminer I have had before from New Zealand, but there is no mistaking the depth, concentration and length."

Complex aromas of rosewater, orange peel, sweet spices and flint on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with precise acidity cutting through the creamy mouthfeel from 11 g/L of residual sweetness. Refined and pure with a phenolic edge adding an extra dimension of depth. Drink or hold.

With maturing vines and a truly favourable year for Gewurz, this wine speaks with real accuracy and pride of its place. This, along with slow, whole bunch pressings, wild ferments and extended lees contact, has resulted in a wine which is defined by remarkable grace and clarity.

Rippon

Rippon Vineyard is one of the most breathtaking sites in Central Otago.

For over a century the Mills family has farmed this small patch of earth on the banks of Lake Wanaka. Nick Mills is the fourth generation of his family to walk the rows on Rippon. He now farms the site according to biodynamic principles.

The Mills family and Rippon are intrinsically linked. There's a deep connection to the land which Nick translates into their superlative wines.

Pinot Noir, Gamay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer all excel at Rippon. The wines are made with patience and love.

In the wines of Rippon, you can sense everything that is transcendent about terroir-driven winemaking where the story of a place is told through the wines it produces.
