Description

Ngeringa has been farming biodynamically since long before it became fashionable, and you can feel that hands-on approach in pretty much everything they bottle.

The Sheoak Syrah is one of their more dependable reds, and 2023 was a terrific vintage for this site. Cool, mild weather meant the fruit came in with bright flavour and lovely purity.  30% whole bunches and mostly older French oak keep freshness and spiciness at the forefront.

On the note there's red and blue fruits, a bit of pepper, and some gentle herbal lift from the whole bunch work. Juicy darker fruits on the palate, with fine tannins and a low hum of earth and minerality running underneath it all.

We love this style of cool climate Syrah and Ngeringa have knocked this out of the park.

Top 100 Wines of 2025

Erinn and Janet Klein achieve quietly and instinctively what so many do through performative preaching and adherence to agendas. What began as an extension of the herb farm that supplied the family’s skincare business, Jurlique, has become one of the country’s most significant biodynamic vineyards. This gently graceful syrah eloquently captures what they do so well. It’s a wine of quietly confident energy, fragrant and full of supple dark fruits and lively spice. Beautiful on many levels.

    Disappointing

This was far too acidic for me with not much flavour. A miss.

A lively and youthful Syrah, offering aromas of black currant, satsuma plum, raspberries, and red currant. Notes of rose, savoury olive tapenade, and spice add interest and complexity. The palate is bright with red currant flavours, complemented by sweet cedar and delicate hints of cinnamon and allspice. The wine has an addictive length and firm, enticing tannins.

Vintage notes: The growing season leading into the vintage of 2023 was by all accounts our wettest and coolest in at least a decade. A long, slow, much later-than-normal harvest meant amazing flavour development and great acid retention in the grape across all varieties.

Vineyard notes: The grapes for this Syrah come from three of our long-certified biodynamic vineyards. The Iluma Vineyard, facing west at an altitude of 420m, is home to our prized Iluma Syrah. The Summit Vineyard faces east, while the Rufus Vineyard faces west. Ngeringa has maintained a chemical-free approach—using no pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, or insecticides—dating back to 1980.

Winemaking: Approximately 30% of the grapes were fermented as whole bunches, with the rest de-stemmed. The wine was aged for 12 months, primarily in seasoned French oak barrels, before being blended in tank and lightly sulphured prior to bottling.
