Description

Perched high between Cromwell and Wānaka, Nanny Goat’s Queensberry vineyard produces one of the most distinctive expressions in their range. The site’s elevation and glacial schist soils deliver small, concentrated berries with natural tension and striking aromatics – Pinot grown on the edge, both literally and stylistically.

The 2023 season moved at an unhurried pace, allowing slow, steady ripening and superb balance. Fruit was hand-picked, fermented with native yeasts, and aged in French oak, handled with restraint to capture the site’s precision rather than smooth it over.

The wine is fragrant and finely etched – red cherry, spice and a hint of wild thyme sitting over taut, mineral tannins. It’s lighter in frame than the Bendigo wine but more intricate, showing Queensberry’s hallmark combination of lift and backbone.

James Suckling 93 Points

Lots of black cherries and black licorice with stone and slate on the nose. Medium-bodied, this has crunchy, chewy fruit and a flavorful finish. Structured with polished tannins. Persistent at the end. Drink or hold.

Winemaker Comments
Typical of Queensberry Pinot Noir, the nose is dark and brooding yet beautifully perfumed, with concentrated black and blue berry fruits layered among aromas of exotic spice and dried flowers. The palate is taut and powerful, showing ripe black plum, wild berry fruits, and discreetly integrated oak. Powdery fine tannins coat the mouth, lending a sinewy, elegant core balanced by a fine streak of acidity that provides lift and vibrancy. A wine that is both powerful and dense, yet beautifully light on its feet.

Geographical Indication

Vineyard
Fruit was sourced exclusively from our vineyard in Queensberry, comprising clones 113, 777, and Abel.

Winemaking
Hand-picked fruit was destemmed into small open-top fermenters, retaining a high proportion of whole berries. Each fermenter underwent a short pre-fermentation maceration before natural fermentation and up to 32 days on skins prior to pressing.
A small experimental parcel of clone 777 was fermented as whole bunches in barrel on the vineyard. Following a brief settling period post-press, the wine was racked to 225L French oak barriques (29% new), where it underwent natural malolactic fermentation and matured for 10 months before bottling on 16 March 2023.
