Description

Michael Downer’s run of form continues - and the 2023 Landau Syrah might just be his finest yet. From Murdoch Hill’s home vineyard in Oakbank, this is Adelaide Hills Syrah at its most graceful and expressive.

Where some vintages have shown a darker, more brooding edge, 2023 feels finer and more poised. There’s the hallmark lift of white pepper and olive tapenade, wrapped around a core of red and blue fruits and framed by those trademark, silky Murdoch Hill tannins. It’s medium-bodied, detailed and quietly confident - the sort of Syrah that feels as much Rhône as it does Hills.

Michael has been steadily redefining what Adelaide Hills Shiraz can be over the last decade, and the Landau sits right at the heart of that story. Elegant, savoury and beautifully composed - this is modern Australian Syrah done right.

Forever taken aback by the perfume of this wine. Boysenberry, red plum, crushed gravel, roses closed tight, and there's reservation and tension here. Peppery, sure, but distinctively pink, all rosy and floral. The tannins are fine, powdery and dispersed, but sure-footed. There's an exuberance in its youth that might make this exasperatingly hard to cellar, for the want to enjoy it now. An elegant and balanced release despite the cold, late and challenging '23 vintage.

Perfumed and delicate aromas of Damson plums, white pepper and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of blackberries, blueberry bush, spices and violets. Wonderfully integrated and fresh with a fine structure. Very good. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    LOVE IT

One the best Syrah I've tried this year. Elegant, fine, powerful. Much better than an OZ shiraz in my view.
