Description

Chris and Andrea Mullineux know their way around Swartland’s old vines, and this is a perfect introduction to their style: all about balance, purity, and letting the vineyards do the talking.

Sourced from three sustainably farmed sites, including some gnarly old bush vines, this Chenin Blanc is fermented with wild yeasts and aged for 10 months in a mix of stainless steel and old French oak (15%). That little bit of oak brings just enough texture to keep things interesting, while the rest of the wine stays crisp and refreshing.

Expect juicy pear, white peach, and quince on the nose, with a hint of crushed stone and a flicker of honey in the background. The palate is smooth and mouthwatering, packed with bright stone fruit and a clean, mineral finish that makes it almost too easy to keep sipping.

Delicious now, but don’t be surprised if it picks up even more character with a bit of time in the bottle.

93 points - "The 2023 Mullineux Kloof Street Old-Vine Chenin Blanc is outstanding! Many consumers have identified South African Chenin Blancs as some of the best fine wine values in the world and the Kloof Street bottling shows why. Swartland is a broad region that extends north from Capetown. The relatively dry climate and difficult growing conditions here yield wines with concentration and depth. The Kloof Street Chenin is drawn from three Swartland vineyards on both shale and decomposed granite soils. The Mullineux Kloof Street Old Vine Chenin Blanc has an intriguing bouquet of ripe pear, apple, tropical fruit, honey and citrus. On the palate, the pure apple, pear, citrus and pineapple fruit flavors are followed by hints of citrus peel and subtle herbs. All these nuances are enhanced by a rich texture and the subtle herb and spice tones that linger at the finish." - Wayne Belding (Wine Review Online)

Vineyard Notes:

From three sustainably farmed vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: One parcel of 40 year old Chenin planted in the stony Shale and Schist based soils of Kasteelberg, and two parcels of 40+ year-old dry land, bush vine Chenin grown in the decomposed Granite soils of the Paardeberg.

Production Notes:

Grapes are chilled in our cold room then pressed whole bunch and the juice is allowed to settle overnight. Minimal SO 2 is added and, as with all our wines, no further additions are made. The juice is then racked to tank (85%) and older French oak barrels (15%) for fermentation. Fermentation is with indigenous yeasts and lasts up to 6 weeks. The barrels are racked and blended with the tank fermented portion and then bottled.
