Description

Rosehill Vineyard was originally planted by Australian wine legend Maurice O'Shae in 1946. There's an argument to be made that it's one of the most important vineyards planted in Australia over the last century.

What O'Shea did from those vines set in motion a revolution in Australian wine, taking it from a bulk commercial trade into the realm of fine wine. Those wines he made during the 50's and 60's from his Hunter Valley vineyard still survive today.

The modern-day Rosehill Shiraz is all class and elegance - a floral and earthy Hunter Shiraz of grace and gentle power. Some coffee oak notes, and high-toned spices are apparent, among the earthy, plummy fruit. There's a lick of grainy tannin to the finish. A lovely, savoury Shiraz from the historic Rosehill vineyard.

An easy bet to cellar for ten-plus years.

"The Rosehill vineyard... It is a superb drink, with its seamless nature, fine tannins and softly sculpted palate. Easy to love."
- Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Feels dense but sits high in the palate, satiny and then a fine trill of grainy, tensing tannins. Indeed, tannin quality is great here. Almost a pinosity to this wine too. Great charm."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

96 points - "The Rosehill vineyard, with its slightly higher elevation and north-easterly aspect, is one of the last vineyards harvested in the Hunter Valley. This year's wine is a blend of the '56 and '65 vines. It has excellent flow and balance, with pitch-perfect medium weight, cherry fruit, faint florals and impressive vitality. It is a superb drink, with its seamless nature, fine tannins and softly sculpted palate. Easy to love." - Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Medium weight, supple and succulent, a sense of density and concentration, quite sweet-fruited with a core of black olive, ginger biscuit, sage leaf, aniseed and choc-liquorice. Feels dense but sits high in the palate, satiny and then a fine trill of grainy, tensing tannins. Indeed, tannin quality is great here. Almost a pinosity to this wine too. Great charm." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

93 points - "Immediate appeal. Cherry pie and black olive, rose water. It’s quite plummy too, a mix of dried bitter herbs, pink peppercorn, black tea tannins, cool, soft, with bergamot orange lift, full-flavoured, filles the mouth, slightly broad in that way but translucent in the flow making it medium-bodied at best but impactful flavour with a ferrous and peppery finish. Has a bit of a chew to the end and dusty aftertaste. Just feels a bit obvious, but very good. Good appeal." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

94+ points - "Boysenberry, dark raspberry, violet and dried rose, some sweet damp earthiness and biscuit spice. Medium-bodied, ripe black and red fruit, a bit richer and more brooding this year, black olive savoury, some dried herb too, tannin is fleshy and there’s a spicy finish of good length. Nice." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Another excellent medium-bodied delight from Mount Pleasant, this Rosehill Shiraz lands in the pleasure zone with supreme ease.

After a few days of tasting, the tension and focus highlight its ageing potential. A blend of the two Rosehill plantings (1946 & 1965), dark cherries and red cherries are partnered by blueberries and boysenberries. Medium-bodied as you'd expect, dark chocolate dust, a little cola and a delightful savoury drive with a host of dried herbs bring the splendour. Powdery tannins surge and shine on a fabulously lengthy finish. All class." - Q Wine Reviews

    Classic Hunter shiraz

A really nice Hunter Shiraz, with just enough time in the bottle to be worthy of opening now, but could have done with another few years. Good fruit. There's a lot going with this wine and needs time in the glass to open up and soften just a little. Decanting might be good here. A quality Hunter Shiraz

First planted by Maurice O’Shea in 1946, the Rosehill Vineyard is a wonderful site. Producing wines that are quintessentially Hunter Valley, they are bright, red-fruited, and elegant, with the ability to age gracefully for the long term. This single vineyard wine is a representation of the best of this vineyard in that specific year of production.

Tasting Notes

Red fruit and floral notes with a lovely complexing spice note. An elegant focussed wine with lovely length and balance, full of rich red fruits.
