Description

Mountain C Light Bodied Dry Red might be the wine in this lineup that best captures the essence of Maurice O'Shea's mastery. O'Shea was known for his keen eye for blending. The wines he designated Mountain C represented the most light-bodied and elegant of his creations.

This vintage is a delicate and refined expression, co-fermented with a touch of montils from the top blocks of the 1946 Rosehill plantings. The nose is a vibrant medley of fresh red berries, lovely spice, and floral violets. On the palate, it’s elegant and intense, with beautiful weight and length. The fresh fruit flavours linger long after the wine has departed, creating a memorable and satisfying finish.

Designed to be enjoyed young but with the potential to age gracefully over the next 30 years, the Mountain C is "Hunter River Burgundy" to it's back teeth. It’s a wine that connects you to the rich history and tradition of the Hunter Valley, offering a light yet complex drinking experience that’s both nostalgic and timeless.

This is extremely limited. If you love the more ethereal side of Hunter Shiraz, this is a must-buy.

"Filigree and prettiness, rosy, rose hip tea perfume with woody spices, some darker currant and cherry notes, brambles, turned earth, fennel, salted liquorice. Palate and perfume in agreeance. Tannins are so high quality, fine, sleek, draw the wine long, Concentration and intensity and by-words, but the wine has such immense drinkability too. A pretty, floral sweetness to finish. Wonderful, serious wine. This is the one I want to drink the most of."

97 points - "Deep-ish purple-red colour, bright and clear; the bouquet is all fresh dark plum and dried cherry, the palate flavour impressively deep and concentrated, yet wonderfully elegant, with penetrating flavour enlivened by beautifully managed tannins and acidity. A wine of power and presence, concentration and amplitude that fills the senses and totally satiisfies. Long term potential. (Light bodied seems a tad puzzling!)" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "It does what it says. Lovely. Red apple skin. Rosehip perfume. But also purple tones, black cherry and red plum. Slippery texture, bouncy and vivid balloon skin tannins, quite peppery all the way through, with some polished leather. Pure fruit flow, stony and granitic almost with that haunting red apple skin chew and lift and pink peppercorn finish. Compelling and very pleasantly sippable." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

97 points - "Great perfume, blue and purple fruit, aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, succulent and composed, and the tannin feels bang on, there, very present, but fine-grained and sitting so well within the wine. Raspberry and perfume on a finish of impeccable length. Beautiful wine. This will age magnificently. So fine. Tossing up between 96+ or 97 points here, though I think I’ll go with the latter." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Mountain Range wines pay homage to Maurice O’Shea’s talent as a master blender. He had an astounding ability to make and recognise small unique parcels. Depending on what style they were, light bodied, medium bodied or full bodied, O’Shea gave each of them different doe names: Mountain C, Mountain A and Mountain D.

Tasting Notes

Fresh red berries coupled with lovely spice and violets. Elegant and intense, this light bodied wine has beautiful weight and length. The fruit lingers on the palate well after the wine has departed.

Drinking Window

Mountain C drinks beautifully in its youth but will age gracefully over the next 30 years.
