97 points - "The original block planted by Maurice O'Shea in 1946 on those red volcanic soils that make the Hunter Valley so unique, this is a thrilling expression of Shiraz. Winemaker Adrian Sparks tells me 2023 is a brilliant vintage, and to take a look at these Mount Pleasant wines in his care it is clear he isn't mincing his words. The best sites in the Hunter hug the range and are east-facing. The mountain shelters these vines from the afternoon sun and wind. Blueberries, plums, boysenberry and some baked raspberries roll out an inviting introduction. A shy appearance of black fruit early takes a couple of days to stand tall. Give it some time and it sure does. Dangerously silky and precise, meat jus and a flicker of chorizo add a delicious savoury nuance. Fine, powdery tannins sing glory and class from every corner. The palate is full-bodied and firmly structured, ample tannins that are finely grained and supple. This is a big step up in intensity, weight and structure from the regular Rosehill.
