Description

The highest rated of the Village Chardonnays this year, this is a blistering Chardonnay from the Mac Forbes team.

Tucked in a smaller valley that stretches from Yarra Junction to Poweltown, this east-facing vineyard enjoys cooler winds off the Yarra River, with mountain ranges to the north and southwest offering shelter from the harsh afternoon sun.

The grey loam soils with underlying silt, combined with the site’s natural protection, allow the Chardonnay grapes to ripen later, developing thicker skins and maintaining bright acidity.

This Chardonnay is all about balance and precision. The wine's elegant structure and clean, linear profile are complemented by a powerful drive on the palate, making it as refreshing as it is complex.

This is in the flinty, crunchy iteration of the Mac Forbes Chardonnay supermarket. A real minerally feel here, with citrus and grapefruit being the dominant fruit characters. It's a pithy, dramatic wine that will reward some cellaring.

"From a single site. A few hours of skin contact before fermentation and maturation in seasoned barriques. A brilliant green gold. Restrained with aromas of just-ripened orchard fruits, yellow plum, orange blossom and grilled hazelnuts. Really persistent, balanced, tensile and long. A lovely wine destined to blossom over the next, at least, seven to 10 years."

95 points - "The boundaries are being pushed – it’s 11% alcohol – but there’s good flavour here, not to mention style, not to mention an extra kick of flavour through the finish. Indeed there’s more than a little x-factor to this wine. Lactose, grapefruit, pear, green apple and fennel flavours come with a light coating of custard powder and woodsmoke. It all sails so beautifully along. There’s a floral element here too; if ever a wine benefited from being decanted, it’s this one. Every time I returned to my glass it had something else to say." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

East facing within a smaller valley that runs from Yarra Junction to Poweltown in the south, featuring grey loam soils with underlying silt. Cooler winds roll off the Yarra River, with mountains directly to the north and south-west providing protection from the hot afternoon sun in summer. Typically later ripening, thicker skins and higher acids are reflected in elegant structure with clean lines and powerful drive.

Mac Forbes

If you love premium and artisanal Australian wine, Mac Forbes is a name you need to know. He’s not only one of the country’s most talented winemakers, but he’s one of the most influential spokesmen for promoting the concept of Australian ‘terroir’, believing that wine should represent a time and a place.

Mac specialises in single vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet from the Yarra Valley. His wines are delicate and finely etched, characterised by subtlety and grace.

His Pinot Noirs are fine-boned, the Chardonnays are adored by lovers of fruit purity rather than winemaking artifice, and his array of off-dry Rieslings from the Strathbogie Ranges are among the country's most interesting. Additionally, his ever-expanding range of experimental wines is a treasure trove for the curious drinker.
