Description

This collaboration started with a "dangerous friendship" forged at the London Wine Fair in 1995, and a friendly insult. The premise was simple: Erni Loosen told the Barry family that, while good, Clare Valley Riesling was "not that interesting." He felt the region had backed itself into a corner of making linear, "squeaky clean" wines and challenged them to find more complexity.

The answer lay in the past. Inspired by a winemaking text from 1807 and a fresh-tasting dry German Riesling from 1947, Erni convinced the Barrys to look backward to move forward. The secret? Time.

Sourced from the historic Wolta Wolta block (planted on 900-million-year-old slate), the fruit for the 2023 was left to hang on the vine until late March to build flavour ripeness rather than just acid. It was then wild-fermented in a 3,000L German oak fuder and left on gross lees for a staggering 24 months with no bâtonnage.

Sam Barry calls 2023 "the coolest vintage since the legendary 2002." It is a vintage defined by hang-time, resulting in a wine that is immediately charming but built for the long haul.

This is the antithesis of the "lime and petrol" stereotype. It is textural and exotic, layering kaffir lime and lemongrass over deeper notes of crème brûlée, apricot kernel and struck match. Thanks to the "Benjamin Button" effect of long lees ageing, it is incredibly fresh yet undeniably complex.

"Crackling minerality, stony notes, savoury. Shit yeah! This has it all. In youth, the pucker and chew something else, otherworldly compared to rank and file riesling. Leafy herbal notes, blackcurrant, more to add to the shopping cart of descriptors. It’s all about energy and vibrancy and deliciousness. In the slot."

"Where classic Clare riesling is fine detail viewed in tight focus, this is a deep and dazzling image projected through a kaleidoscope. Its “otherness” is aromatically evident. Mango skin, lemongrass, preserved lemon, tangy margarita rims and a smidge of sourdough starter."
- Nick Ryan (The Australian)

96+ points - "The 2023 Loosen Barry Wolta Wolta Dry Riesling looks jarringly fresh and primary in the face of the older vintages tasted alongside here today. The season was cooler and wetter than the preceding six vintages, and it has yielded a wine of leanness and precision here. While the grace and complexity of the wine will not be revealed for some years yet, the material is embedded within the structure of the wine, and it remains impressive and exciting here. This is a superb wine, as they all are. The wine carries four to five grams of residual sugar and was matured on the gross lees (sans bâtonnage) for two years, followed by a year in bottle prior to release. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "The wine is matured in a 3000L foudre and fermented with wild yeast. This is out of the box. Excellent, to give the crib notes. Medium-weight riesling of texture and great interest, plus deliciousness. Savoury elements ripple through in sourdough and cashew nut complexity with red apple, gentle, sweet stone fruit characters, blackcurrant, faint tropical fruit notes and a little leafy, herbal complexity. It's highly perfumed, deeply flavoured, glossy and long in its persistence. Sublime stuff here." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

100% single-vineyard Riesling. Alcohol 12.5%; total acid 7.4g/L; pH 3.11
The grapes are handpicked at a higher maturity, the juice is pressed, settled overnight in stainless
steel, and then wild fermented in the German oak foudre before being left on gross lees in the same oak for 24 months. The extra two years of barrel ageing allow the wine to develop an extraordinary
complexity.

Complex aromas of crème brûlée, crème anglaise, ripe peach, burrata salad and apricot kernel. Richly weighted with a fresh line of salinity. Flavours of candied lemon peel, lemongrass and honeydew melon. With its weighty and silken texture, the 2023 Wolta Wolta Riesling is lush with a very moreish finish.

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
