Description

"Alte Reben" is German for old vines, and in this case, it’s a massive understatement. This wine is sourced from a single nine-acre vineyard in Marananga planted all the way back in 1899. Owning a nineteenth-century vineyard is a rare privilege, and the Kaesler team treats it with the appropriate level of reverence and crafts the fruit into a wine that balances the natural power of Marananga with the grace that only centenarian vines can provide.

The 2023 season was one of the coolest and latest on record for the Barossa, which played right into the hands of this site. Instead of a brutish or heavy red, you get a Shiraz with incredible energy and a surprisingly bright fruit spectrum - think poached plums, cherries, and raspberries. There’s a sophisticated mineral thread of ironstone and graphite running through the core, while 18 months in French oak has been handled beautifully, adding just a hint of vanilla and exotic spice.

Critics have been unanimous on this release, noting its "supple and seamless" glide and incredible length. It’s a big Barossa red, certainly, but it’s one defined by silkiness rather than raw weight. While it’s drinking remarkably well now due to that perfect balance, this is a wine built for the long haul - it’ll easily continue to improve and evolve in the cellar through 2040.

"This is fresh and with good energy. Beautiful oak integration here, and there is just a touch of vanilla evident. Everything is ideally and impressively balanced... Unquestionably, a long and exciting future beckons and one can expect even further improvement. So much to like."

"It’s a powerful wine and the use of new and seasoned French oak for about eighteen months has been really neatly handled. Drinking so well now as a result of that balance, but it does have superb aging potential."
- Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "The colour here is a vibrant magenta/crimson. On the nose, there are
notes of strawberries, cherries, raspberries and spices. Yes, very much at the red fruit end of the spectrum. This is fresh and with good energy.
Beautiful oak integration here, and there is just a touch of vanilla evident. Everything is ideally and impressively balanced. This is very long,
maintaining the intensity and balance for the full journey, finishing with silky tannins. Unquestionably, a long and exciting future beckons and one can expect even further improvement. So much to like. Drink now–2040" - Andrew Caillard MW (The Vintage Journal)

95 points - "A good purple tint to the bright colour; soft plum/earth/vanilla aromas, the palate follows on faithfully with richness and flesh, appealing texture and balance. A touch of ironstone. Poached plums. This is supple and seamless, with lovely texural glide and long, long carry. A big Barossa red of real quality." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points - "In case you’re wondering, Alter Reben is the German for old vine, and this is a single vineyard Shiraz from Kaesler’s Marananga vineyard, which was planted way back in 1899. It’s a thoroughly beautiful wine. The colour is deep red with some purple hues. And the aroma is an exotic combination of spices, dark plum, and a little liqueur chocolate with a red-fruited lift. The palate is certainly not brutish and has the black fruits and slightly minerally graphite-like character threading throughout. It’s a powerful wine and the use of new and seasoned French oak for about eighteen months has been really neatly handled. Drinking so well now as a result of that balance, but it does have superb aging potential." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

Alte Reben, German for ‘Old Vine’, is a single vineyard Shiraz sourced from the Kaesler estate in Marananga, planted in 1899. The wine was matured in a combination of new and seasoned French Oak for 18 months. Few can boast custody of a nine-acre, single vineyard of Shiraz planted in the nineteenth century – we make the most of it.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS: Due to La Nina conditions the Barossa region experienced one of its wettest & coolest Spring. This resulted in delayed budburst with the flow on effect on ripening and picking decisions, with Vintage being 3-4 weeks later than usual. Disease pressure was increased by the wet conditions and required diligent vineyard management. Although the season was challenging, our ongoing regenerative farming techniques have assisted with building resilient vines that continue to produce outstanding fruit. This was evident in the 2023 vintage with the winemakers talking about the wine being elegant and structured with depth and length of flavour.

Harvested by hand and split into three sections of the Alte Reben vineyard, this bottling uses the first and second harvested parcels. The wine spent seven to eight days on skins, during which it was pumped over twice daily, with a more robust pump over in the morning and a gentle splash in the afternoon. After pressing, the wine was allowed to rest for several days before being racked into French oak barrels, 40 percent new, with the balance in two and three year old barrels.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
