Description

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the heart of the Prüm estate. It’s their most iconic site, and in 2023, it’s delivered a Kabinett that’s tightly coiled, effortlessly elegant, and full of promise.

This is the most powerful of Prüm’s Kabinett trio - but it never feels heavy. The fruit is a shade riper, leaning into stone fruit and ripe citrus, but there’s a steely spine of acid and minerality that keeps everything in line. The texture is already silkier than usual - thanks to the vintage’s long, cool ripening window - and the finish has that slow fade that Prüm fans know well.

There’s plenty of detail already showing: lemon pith, white peach, honeysuckle and wet slate, all carried on a light-bodied frame that still feels grounded and complete. The balance is impeccable.

It’s drinking beautifully even now, but if you want to see what makes this vineyard so revered, give it 10–15 years and watch it unfurl. This is Prüm doing what it does best - clarity, length, and depth from one of the Mosel’s greatest sites.

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard has become intrinsically attached to the name of Joh. Jos. Prüm. The Estate owns five hectares of this majestic site. It offers perfect growing conditions for the Riesling grape with its deep, weather-beaten grey slate soil, good water support, extreme steepness of up to 70 % gradient, and its optimal south-south-west exposure. As for the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr is named after the sundial erected in the vineyard in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm, an ancestor of J.J. Prüm, to give the workers a better time orientation. The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr generally possess excellent structure, show beautiful, ripe aromas and flavours (typically stone fruits, like peach, nectarine, apricot), a fine minerality and great depth and length. Especially after having been aged for some years, the harmony, finesse and expression of these wines is unique.

Joh Jos Prum

Founded in 1911, and sporting one of the great unbroken track records for quality (save a short reprieve during World War II), J.J. Prum is one of the great wine producers of Germany, and indeed, the world.

These rare Rieslings are legendary for their incredible longevity, purity, and articulation of place. They are touted by critics as some of the finest examples of Riesling to be found anywhere on the planted. As Stephan Reinhardt once wrote, "the world always seems a better place with a glass of Prüm in hand."

The Prum family has seen the estate through three generations, with current director Dr. Katharina Prum taking hold of the reins during the 2007 harvest. With Katharina's commitment to tradition and quality from her family's label, J.J. Prum is sure to remain one of the benchmarks of the Mosel for decades to come.
