Description

Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the soul of the Prüm estate - and no wine in the lineup expresses the site’s pedigree with more clarity than this Auslese. It’s where ripeness, structure, and finesse all converge, and in 2023, that balance is unusually vivid.

Made from pristine, botrytis-free fruit, this is an Auslese of focus and grace. There’s ripe peach and white blossom, some grapefruit peel and cooling herbs, but it’s the underlying structure - cool slate, fine acidity, and luminous lift - that gives the wine its precision. It carries sweetness, yes, but never feels soft or loose. The finish glides, all line and length.

The 2023 vintage has made this wine feel unusually open in youth, though there’s no mistaking its long arc. It will evolve for decades. Still, there’s something to be said for catching it now - while the fruit is glowing and the detail feels etched into the wine.

A benchmark Auslese from one of the greatest vineyards in the Mosel in an exceptional vintage - it doesn't get much better than this.

“This great Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese shows exactly the combination of white flower and white peach aromas with silky succulence and extraordinary freshness that made these wines legendary... Super-graceful finish that feels like stroking satin. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.”
- Stuart Pigott (Jamessuckling.com)

“The extreme finesse of the Prüm style meets the site’s elegance, with stony lemon running like a central vein through the linear, elongated body. Such finesse, lightness and filigree nature, yet so much depth. Simply astonishing and a paradigm of site and style.”

97 points - “This great Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese shows exactly the combination of white flower and white peach aromas with silky succulence and extraordinary freshness that made these wines legendary. There’s a healthy amount of unfermented grape sweetness, but the interplay of this with the myriad other components is so complex and fascinating. Super-graceful finish that feels like stroking satin. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.” - Stuart Pigott (Jamessuckling.com)

96 points - “The 2023 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, made with virtually no botrytis from ripe grapes, offers equal notes of grapefruit peel, juicy peach and lemon. The extreme finesse of the Prüm style meets the site’s elegance, with stony lemon running like a central vein through the linear, elongated body. Such finesse, lightness and filigree nature, yet so much depth. Simply astonishing and a paradigm of site and style.” - Anne Krebiehl MW (Vinous)

A hard to get bottle which deserves a space in cellar for decades

I tasted this in a wset 3 class and it’s outstanding! Highly concentrated fruits and beautiful flavors complexity. It’s so balanced thanks to the acidity. I would love to see how this bottle ages in next 10-20 years.

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard has become intrinsically attached to the name of Joh. Jos. Prüm. The Estate owns five hectares of this majestic site. It offers perfect growing conditions for the Riesling grape with its deep, weather-beaten grey slate soil, good water support, extreme steepness of up to 70 % gradient, and its optimal south-south-west exposure. As for the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr, Wehlener Sonnenuhr is named after the sundial erected in the vineyard in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm, an ancestor of J.J. Prüm, to give the workers a better time orientation. The wines of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr generally possess excellent structure, show beautiful, ripe aromas and flavours (typically stone fruits, like peach, nectarine, apricot), a fine minerality and great depth and length. Especially after having been aged for some years, the harmony, finesse and expression of these wines is unique. Riesling guru Stuart Pigott has written; "Joh Jos Prüm's Sonnenuhrs are classic examples of the way in which the best Mosel wine's natural sweetness magnifies, rather than obscures, their character. These are a perfect marriage of Riesling's peach-like, floral and mineral aspects. White wine cannot be fresher, more vivid and delightful."

Joh Jos Prum

Founded in 1911, and sporting one of the great unbroken track records for quality (save a short reprieve during World War II), J.J. Prum is one of the great wine producers of Germany, and indeed, the world.

These rare Rieslings are legendary for their incredible longevity, purity, and articulation of place. They are touted by critics as some of the finest examples of Riesling to be found anywhere on the planted. As Stephan Reinhardt once wrote, "the world always seems a better place with a glass of Prüm in hand."

The Prum family has seen the estate through three generations, with current director Dr. Katharina Prum taking hold of the reins during the 2007 harvest. With Katharina's commitment to tradition and quality from her family's label, J.J. Prum is sure to remain one of the benchmarks of the Mosel for decades to come.
