Description

Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese has always been a sweet spot in the Prüm lineup - more open than Wehlener Sonnenuhr, more layered than the Kabinett wines, and often the first cuvée to show its hand.

In 2023, it plays that role perfectly. It’s a vintage that gave the Prüm wines remarkable purity and lift, and here that translates to a Spätlese that’s equal parts charm and precision. The fruit is fine and expressive - white peach, citrus, spring blossom - but it’s the clean cut of acidity and cool mineral thread that gives the wine its shape.

Katharina Prüm has often pointed to Spätlese as the most versatile style at the table, and this vintage backs that up. It’s light on its feet but carries enough depth to handle richer dishes, and it’s already drinking beautifully, though it’ll develop for decades.

Graacher Himmelreich directly borders the southern edge of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. The wines from this site often often challenge those from its more famous neighbor, especially in hot, dry years. Graacher wines attract with their racy acidity, a pronounced minerality (that reminds of crushed rock) and slightly different fruit aromas and flavours (more in the citrus spectrum). Often, the wines become accessible slightly earlier than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and are deliciously mouth-watering when young. Looking at the vineyard conditions, the hill faces slightly more westwards than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr , i.e. it has a more south-west exposure, it is a little less steep and has deeper soils which act as excellent water reservoirs.

Founded in 1911, and sporting one of the great unbroken track records for quality (save a short reprieve during World War II), J.J. Prum is one of the great wine producers of Germany, and indeed, the world.

These rare Rieslings are legendary for their incredible longevity, purity, and articulation of place. They are touted by critics as some of the finest examples of Riesling to be found anywhere on the planted. As Stephan Reinhardt once wrote, "the world always seems a better place with a glass of Prüm in hand."

The Prum family has seen the estate through three generations, with current director Dr. Katharina Prum taking hold of the reins during the 2007 harvest. With Katharina's commitment to tradition and quality from her family's label, J.J. Prum is sure to remain one of the benchmarks of the Mosel for decades to come.
