Description

We’ve been following Jericho’s wines for well over a decade, and they’ve always been a source of reliably delicious, great-value drinking. This release feels a little extra special though - it’s the first Grenache to come off their own vineyard in Blewitt Springs, the subregion that’s become the heartland for the variety in McLaren Vale.

The site is classic Blewitt Springs: ancient sandy soils, plenty of sun, and cooling sea breezes from the Gulf. That combination gives Grenache its perfume and its trademark fine, sandy tannin – both of which are on full display here.

The 2023 is fragrant and pretty, with red berries, violets and a flicker of spice on the nose. The palate is juicy and bright – cranberry, ripe cherry – with that savoury backbone that makes you want another glass. Winemaking is gentle and unfussy: hand-picked fruit, a short ferment, and just six months in old French oak.

It’s an early release style that’s built for drinking now, the kind of wine that suits a long lunch or a midweek bowl of pasta. Fresh, silky and absolutely spot on.

"It’s light of weight, could likely be chilled a fraction, but it’s got tannin, and will match a broad range of dishes. Delicious."

From the Jericho-owned Bracken vineyard in Blewitt Springs; matured in old French oak. Pale in the glass and super pretty and lifted, blooming with red and blue florals, musk and rosewater, across cranberry, redcurrant, pomegranate and orange oil – a notably cool year and a modern sensibility writ large. It’s light of weight, could likely be chilled a fraction, but it’s got tannin, and will match a broad range of dishes. Delicious.

Juicy, Perfumed & Silky
The first wine released from our own vineyard in Blewitt Springs, this pretty and perfumed Grenache exemplifies why this sub region of McLaren Vale is celebrated for growing this variety. Bright red fruits, fresh cranberries and perfectly ripe cherries explode out of the glass, accompanied by an undercurrent of violet florals and warming baking spice. The palate is juicy and fresh, supported by the fine-grained tannin structure famous to Blewitt Springs Grenache.

Wine Notes
Hand harvested fruit from the middle and bottom sections of our Grenache block was fermented in open vessels which were gently plunged once a day to extract soft tannins. Pressed off after a week on skins and matured in seasoned French oak for just 6 months, this early release style is perfect long lunch drinking material.

Vineyard
Our vineyard is on Kaurna country in the McLaren Vale subregion of Blewitt Springs. The soils are sandy, nutrient poor, and truly ancient; as old as 56 million years old. Growing season days are long and sunny, moderated by cooling sea breezes from the Gulf of St. Vincent. This site produces fruit of great concentration and fine tannin, with resulting wines that are both powerful and elegant.

Food Pairing
This lighter bodied style of red is well suited to spicy and fresh foods. Try traditional Moroccan chermoula roasted vegetables with chickpeas and couscous.

Cellaring
This wine is best enjoyed within 3-5 years.
