Description

Howard Park has been part of the Margaret River story since the late 80s, and over the years they’ve built a reputation for making Cabernet that really captures what the region does best. The Miamup label is their more approachable take on the variety, pulling fruit from across their vineyards to create something that’s both classic and easy to enjoy.

The 2023 vintage was on the cooler side, which is great news for Cabernet. It meant a slower, longer ripening season, giving the grapes plenty of time to build flavour and fine tannins without losing freshness. The winemaking is kept pretty simple – small batch ferments, gentle handling, and some time in French oak – all designed to let the fruit shine.

What you end up with is a Cabernet that ticks a lot of boxes. It’s got the blackcurrant and leafy lift that Margaret River is known for, a bit of spice and earthiness for complexity, and enough structure to hold it all together. It’s polished, but not overworked, and sits in that sweet spot of being drinkable now but with the bones to improve over a few years. For the price, it’s a bit of a no-brainer.

Very deep, bright, youthful purple-red colour. Good depth of blackberry aromas, fresh and ripe and varietally true. The wine is medium-full bodied and rich with pleasing powdery tannins and smart cabernet structure, the finish ploughing long and satisfying. Lively and balanced, and has cellaring potential. Really keen value at the price.

A picture-perfect vintage has produced one of the best cabernets under this label yet. Bold statement of blackcurrant and lifted blackberry on the nose with a trace of bay leaf and dried herb character. Beautifully seductive and smoothly textured palate with the structure and definition that is cabernet, giving it purpose. A wine like this selling for just $30 is crazy.

Lightness on feet thanks to oak that doesn’t overpower, and bright, vibrant acidity that shimmies through the tannins and fruit weight. Nota dense Cabernet, rather mid-weight and easy to drink now. While there’s plenty of bright and juicy fruit, this is Cabernet in a savoury key. Salt dust, juicy red and purple fruited, graphite, black olive pop and a bresaola, cured meat note. Lovely long line, a wine of surprising finesse for under $30.

Soft aromas of earth, cedar, gravel and bay leaf lead the charge before the fruit begins to emerge – blackcurrant and black cherry. A swirl of the glass unlocks notes of black olive and a whisper of mocha. On the palate, cedar and charry oak come first, followed by blackcurrant, mocha, earth and a touch of dark chocolate. The tannins are firm and grainy, framing the wine as it moves through to a medium-length finish. A bright line of acidity keeps things fresh. This is savoury-led, though not excessively so, offering solid structure and complexity. It’s not the most concentrated wine, but delivers plenty of interest for $30.

The 2023 Miamup Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the felicity of Margaret River’s climate, vineyards and soils for growing and ripening perfectly balanced and intensely flavoursome Cabernet grapes. Without showing off, this young wine frames an ideal expression of the variety, with a nose of harmonious intensity, fresh dark fruit and black olive perfumes overlaying a fine thread of sweet mocha and cedarwood. The palate is lushly fruited with an array of allusions ranging from raspberry through to blackcurrant, and complementary accents of coffee and Vincotto. A juicy texture resolves into typical Cabernet tannins, present and fine, with the pliancy to confer the desirable characteristic of extreme drinkability to a wine that maintains some layers of complexity to be revealed by medium-term ageing.
