Description

Clos Otto is the flagship of Hentley Farm, a tiny-yielding single-vineyard Shiraz from their Seppeltsfield estate on the western edge of the Barossa. The vines were planted by previous owner Otto Kasper from a cutting of an old and closely guarded Shiraz clone. They're still worked with some fairly antique machinery, and the crop is always minuscule.

Keith Hentschke's estate has become one of the Barossa's most talked-about addresses, with chief winemaker Andrew Quin crafting wines that pack plenty of power but never lose their shape. G-Block is the source here: very shallow red clay loam over shattered limestone on an elevated eastern slope. The vines struggle for vigour, and that's exactly the point.

2023 was a cool, mild year in the Barossa, with below-average daytime temperatures and cool nights. Flavour built slowly and naturally high acidity held on, with picking stretching from mid-March well into April. The fruit was mostly destemmed with a bit of whole bunch, basket pressed, then given 22 months in French oak, 55% of it new.

It's a big, deep Shiraz, all plum and dark berries with violets and warm spice - cinnamon, clove, a touch of star anise. Fine-grained tannins and that cool-year acidity give it real drive through a long finish. It's approachable now but has the stuffing to go well past 2035.

A dense, beautifully proportioned Clos Otto from a slow, even season, and one of the Barossa's great single-vineyard Shiraz.

"A massive wine but it’s all in proportion, and will richly reward long keeping."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

97 points
"Elegantly powerful. Quintessentially Barossa."
- Andrew Caillard MW and Jeni Port (The Vintage Journal)

96 points
"The wine sports a contemporary feel but it sings true to the Barossan hymn-sheet... Jeez, Hentley Farm is making some cracking wines at the pointy end of its lineup."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "Very bright, deep, dense, glass staining purple colour; charred caramellised wood and graphite, smoked charcuterie and cocoa nibs on the nose; the palate dense and super-packed with flavour and ultra-ripe fruit. Some spicy/herbal characters. The tannins are biting and gritty with a hint of pleasantly cleansing bitterness and balanced grip. A massive wine but it’s all in proportion, and will richly reward long keeping." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

97 points - "Deep crimson. Wax polish, dark chocolate, dark cherry, spice aromas with espresso, marzipan notes. Voluminous and smooth with concentrated dark cherry, blackcurrant fruits, roasted almond, chestnut notes, fine grained/chocolaty textures and well-balanced line of acidity. Builds up chalky firm with richly flavoured dark berry fruits and wax polish notes. Elegantly powerful. Quintessentially Barossa." - Andrew Caillard MW and Jeni Port (The Vintage Journal)

96 points - "Deep crimson in the glass and deeply aromatic with glossy satsuma plum, blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry fruits. Hints of baking spices, roasting meats, violets, dark chocolate, some distant ferrous notes, nicely judged vanillin oak and earth. The wine sports a contemporary feel but it sings true to the Barossan hymn-sheet with heady fruit density and purity, a superfine, compact tannin array and a bright mineral line that lends detail and cadence as the wine trails away with a sense of latent power and grace. Jeez, Hentley Farm is making some cracking wines at the pointy end of its lineup." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

SEPPELTSFIELD VINEYARD

Opulence, complexity and balance all come to mind when thinking about the Clos Otto Shiraz…

With vines planted by previous owner Otto Kasper using a cutting from an ageing and secret Shiraz clone, and tended to with almost antique machinery and a well-practiced hand, the Clos Otto vineyard consistently yields super low quantities with ultra-rich flavours.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
