Description

Jeffrey Grosset’s Gaia vineyard is one of the most dramatic sites in the Clare Valley - perched at 560 metres, rugged, rocky, and consistently delivering some of the most refined Cabernet in the country. Since its first release in the 1980s, Gaia has stood as Grosset’s vision of what Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc can achieve at altitude: elegant, structured, and built for the long haul.

The 2023 vintage is already being spoken of as one of the great Gaias. Yields were down, but what was picked has extraordinary concentration. The blend - around 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc - spent 18 months in French oak barriques (45% new), emerging with a compact core of cassis, redcurrant and black cherry, lifted by violet, cedar, and graphite. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied but unrelenting, with fine, mineral tannins and a cool, slate-like freshness that sets Gaia apart from more opulent Australian Cabernets.

Critics are unanimous. Tyson Stelzer (98 points) praised its “powder-fine tannin structure” and monumental longevity, while Huon Hooke (96 points) highlighted its elegance and fine, powdery tannins. Winsor Dobbin (97 points) called it “a ballerina dancing across your tongue,” while James Suckling (96 points) noted its depth, energy and integration.

This is a Cabernet blend that can be enjoyed young for its precision and vibrancy but will also reward decades in the cellar. With just 400 dozen made, the 2023 Gaia is one of Grosset’s most compelling releases yet - a benchmark for South Australian Cabernet.

"The cool, low-yielding 2023 harvest has presented Grosset's lofty, exposed Gaia vineyard in particularly captivating and dramatic detail!"
- Tyson Stelzer

98 points - "The cool, low-yielding 2023 harvest has presented Grosset's lofty, exposed Gaia vineyard in particularly captivating and dramatic detail! A compact and dense core of blackcurrant and cassis is lifted with bright redcurrant fruit, violet fragrance and accented with classic varietal markers of tobacco leaf and cigar box that linger very long and confident. Unashamedly medium-bodied, it presents unrelenting confidence and determination. What really sets this apart among the greatest Gaias in four decades is its powder-fine, mineral tannin structure, woven intricately with cool acidity to create a structural framework that achieves the ultimate contrast of graceful finesse and monumental longevity. Drink 2038-2053" - Tyson Stelzer (Tyson Stelzer)

97 points - "Jeffrey Grosset is known for making very fine Clare Valley rieslings that are arguably Australia's finest, but he is far from a one-trick pony. This biodynamic blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc is a wonderfully elegant red; think having a ballerina dancing across your tongue. Volumes were down in 2023 - there were only 400 cases made - but this is a wine that can be enjoyed in its youth, or cellared confidently for a decade or more. It gets 97 points for me for its subtle power and persistence, and would be the perfect match for a classic Sunday roast with the family." - Winsor Dobbin (Winsor Dobbin)

96 points - "Deep ruby laced with purple and a lovely cedar and cassis bouquet of classic cabernet characters. The wine is at the lighter end of full bodied and really elegant, with bright and penetrating flavour, fruit leading the way, with raspberry joining in the party, and a sheen of fine powdery tannins running the full length of the palate. Great potential here." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "Aromas of blackcurrants, dried herbs, dark cherries, cedar, violets, black-olive brine and mahogany. The full-bodied palate has finely integrated tannins, bright acidity and a creamy texture, densely packed with flavors of blackberry bush, raspberry compote and licorice. A tightly wound and high-toned blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc that will develop nicely in bottle. Drink or hold." - James Suckling (James Suckling)

In the 1980’s the vision of our founder was to make an elegant, balanced vibrant cabernet from the coolest site in the region. This remains the focus. Gaia just rolls out seemingly better vintage by vintage. Hand-harvested late in the season, it has finesse and controlled power with bright plummy, boysenberry flavours, a tightness of structure and tannins that are supple and satisfying. It has wonderful depth and pleasing length.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
