Description

If the Estate Cabernet is a "best buy," the Block 5 is the undisputed crown jewel. Recently awarded the Top Wine Trophy at the Halliday Cabernet Challenge, this wine comes from the most exceptional parcels of dry-grown vines planted in 1975. The 2023 vintage was near-on perfect for Forest Hill, defined by low yields and a long, cool ripening period that resulted in incredible flavour concentration and aromatic detail.

The nose is dark and saturated, lead by blackberry, dark cherry, and violets, with a subtle sweetness of vanilla pod from 12 months in French oak. What really sets Block 5 apart is the structure; it features a distinct ironstone and graphite mineral line that runs right through the center of the wine. It’s deeply flavoured and powerful, yet it carries the signature Mount Barker elegance that has made this vineyard famous.

The tannins are exceptionally fine and ripe, providing a sophisticated framework that suggests this wine will cruise through the next two decades in the cellar. It is a world-class Cabernet that balances fleshy dark fruit with a savoury, gravelly precision. Simply put, it’s a benchmark release from one of the country’s most historic sites and currently holds the title of one of Australia’s very best Cabernets.

97 Points & Winner of Top Wine Trophy – 2024 Australian Halliday Cabernet Challenge

96 points - "There's a haunting beauty to this wine. Pure dark cherry, cassis with violet florals, understated light minty notes, dashes of white pepper, clove, a bit of turned earth and tobacco here, too. The wine is so very compact, tannins so very fine and high quality, the length of the wine exceptional, persistent in faint grip, spice, earth and blue/black fruit characters. The compact nature of the wine coupled to its refreshment factor is just outstanding. Unreal." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

95+ points - "Classic cabernet in every respect. Beautiful from every angle, too. It tastes of blackcurrant and anise, gum leaves and tobacco, with smoked cedar, chocolate and sweet plum characters sunk deep within. It’s fragrant, it’s deep, its flows and it lingers, the integration of fine-grained tannin yet another highlight. Top notch." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "The 2023 Block 5 Cabernet Sauvignon is perfumed and high-toned, floral and very pretty, with raspberry seed and rose, pomegranate and black cherry. It is superb. The tannins that flow beneath the river of fruit flavors are ferruginous and fine. This is a really impressive wine. It was the winner for a second year in a row of the James Halliday Chardonnay and Cabernet Challenge, a national competition in Australia." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Customer Reviews

The fruit was picked over several small picks, some by hand and some by our selective harvester. Then de-stemmed, chilled into mostly open fermenters, retaining a high percentage of whole berry initially. Cold soak and then inoculated. The fermenters were pumped over with aeration or plunged by hand; temperature allowed to rise with peak around 25-26 degrees. The wine was then pressed to French barrels (20% new) and a 3000L Foudre. The wine was blended and bottled after 12 months maturation.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
