Description

"If there is a poster child for the wines of the ‘New Spain’, then Envínate is a strong candidate."
- Luis Gutierrez (The Wine Advocate)

Margalagua is one of the most singular sites in Envínate’s portfolio — a steep, north-facing vineyard clinging to the cliffs above the Atlantic in Tenerife’s Anaga region. Planted to a field blend of centenarian vines — Negramoll, Listán Negro, Listán Gaucho, and others — it’s farmed by hand, without irrigation, and worked entirely without additions in the cellar. The 2023 was wild fermented with a mix of whole bunch and destemmed fruit, then aged in neutral barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

This wine is all tension and depth — savoury red fruit, crushed volcanic rock, wild herbs, salt air. There’s a ferrous edge, a flicker of smoke, and a mineral drive that carries from start to finish. The palate is fine and precise, with tight tannins, pure acidity, and zero excess. Nothing here feels shaped or polished — it’s just the vineyard, uncut.

Only a handful of bottles make it out each year, but be sure to try this remarkable and unique Spanish red while you can.

"It's a symphony of rose petals, cracked pepper, wet pumice stone and volcanic ash. It's medium to full-bodied, very fine-boned, with fine-grained tannins, with clout, power and concentration and gobsmacking balance... Bravo!"
- Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

100 points - "The 2023 Táganan Parcela Margalagua resembles the 2021, perhaps with a little more elegance and depth. They have lowered the use of powder sulfur in the vineyards and they select finer lees for the aging of the wines in barrel; they feel all that has helped to avoid the reductive character in the wine, even if you always have the natural tendency of the volcanic soils. It's a symphony of rose petals, cracked pepper, wet pumice stone and volcanic ash. It's medium to full-bodied, very fine-boned, with fine-grained tannins, with clout, power and concentration and gobsmacking balance. It has 12% alcohol, with a pH of 3.35 and 6.18 grams of acidity. It might have similar acidity and parameters, but the sense of freshness, acid berries and blood orange peel is higher. Bravo!" - Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

Importer's Notes:

Parcela Margalagua is an ancient vineyard planted on the north eastern corner of Tenerife, near the town of Taganana. The vines here weave over and under the soil as branches have been weighed down and buried as a means of grafting in the phylloxera free island soil, meaning it's almost impossible to determine vine ages or even determine where a single vine begins or ends. The branches above the ground are propped up only by "Y" shaped sticks, which have an unfortunately tendency to fall over in heavy wind. Quite frankly Margalagua is a vineyard unlike anything we have ever seen before, in a way it's a glimpse into what viticulture may have looked like if phylloxera never existed and that adds to the sense that the Canary Islands are part of some parrellel universe of the wine world - a Jurrasic Park for varietals, styles, viticulture that long ago died out in the rest of Spain. It's too hard to talk about varietals, I could name some of them but it doesn't help to understand the wine, it's suffice to say that there's probably twelve or thirteen different ones going into this wine. As for what it tastes like, for that i'll quote directly from Luis Gutierrez, he's a Spanish journalist so he's more impartial than I am... "If the village was impressive, the one sourced from a specific plot was other worldly... There is more depth and complexity than in the village reed, a tantalizing mixture of peppers and stones, with a herbal touch, aromatic and changing the glass. It shows great elegance and it's more insinuating. The palate has a silky texture, with great acidity and length. it ends with a strong sensation, marine, almost salt."
