Description

If you want Chardonnay with some flesh and weight, this is one of the best value you are going to find in Margaret River.

Bruce Dukes' obsession with Chardonnay clones has brought him to the conclusion that the Gin Gin clone is the best suited in Margaret River. As such, he uses this Gin Gin exclusively with all his Chardonnays, searching for sites where the variety does best in his region.

His mid-tier Floris Chardonnay shows ample barrel complexity alongside delicious stone fruit characters and a hint of grapefruit.

Classic Margaret River Chardonnay and great buying at this price.

"Gosh, Floris is charming this vintage. Pared back and refined, but charming nonetheless. A light showing of grapefruit and white nectarine, a flutter of ginger powder and gossamer-like creamy lees. Oak a mere backdrop. Moreish and savoury, and superb now, yet will last some distance."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This has so much character and nuance, it might take you a few sips before you quite know how to respond. Great wines tend to do that in my opinion. Try this with curry fried cauliflower and garlic naan bread."

"One of the best value chardonnays on the planet... It’s Duke’s Blonde on Blonde."

95 points - "Matured for 10 months in 30% new oak barrels. Citron lemon skin, turmeric and jonquil flowers. There is calamansi lime zest too with pockets of white peach and rum soaked pineapple. A delightful mesh of grainy skin grip adds further dimension to the wine, with driving acidity and power that belies its moderate alcohol. Some ginger ale and Amaro bitterness rounds out the finish like a standing ovation. This has so much character and nuance, it might take you a few sips before you quite know how to respond. 94 points - "One of the best value chardonnays on the planet... Promised floral notes make an immediate impression: jasmine blooming on muggy evenings, chamomile drying in the sun, a hedgerow of elderflowers. White peach and lemon barley water too. Benefits from barrels with the lightest toasting. It’s Duke’s Blonde on Blonde." - Nick Ryan (The Weekend Australian)

93 points - "This is a fine-boned and fairly lean expression of MR Chardonnay, and I’m trying to decide if it’s just a bit too lean, or just a cooler style. It’s floral, white fruit and grapefruit, a firm kiss of ginger oak, which subsides with some airing, and slight struck match. It has some sour yoghourt in with white fruit and citrus, almond too, a pleasing chalk dust texture, and a bright finish of good length and tangy citrus zip. Nice wine. Lively. I’d like a bit more substance in the middle, though others may find the light touch just the ticket." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

One of the best value chardonnays on the planet

The above quotation from the Weekend Australian’s Nick Ryan encouraged me to buy 6 bottles. I’m very happy with my purchase. Floris is a medium bodied wine exhibiting melon, white peach and citrus characteristics all in perfect balance.

    Good midweek chardonnay option

This is a good midweek chardonnay option - definitely ticks the Margaret River chardonnay box!

Floris is a modern and engaging expression of our local clone into wine. This style is a co-evolution of Modern Australian food and wine culture, which has great emphasis on balance, freshness and hedonistic pleasure. The sustainably farmed vineyard is in the cool southern end of Margaret River. Floris exhibits delicate textures and floral notes reminiscent of white jasmine flowers.
Restricted malo‐lactic fermentation, battonage fortnightly to add complexity and texture through “sur lie” whilst retaining purity of character and freshness.
