Description

Coriole has been growing Montepulciano since 2001, drawn to its deep colour, bold fruit, and natural savoury edge. A late-ripening variety, it’s often the last picked, with fruit coming from both their home block on terra rossa soils - adding structure - and their warmer Willunga vineyard, which brings richness and generosity.

The 2023 release is dark, juicy, and full of flavour. Plum and mulberry lead the way, backed by a touch of spice, dried herbs, and dark chocolate. It’s plush and generous but held together by bright acidity and firm tannins, giving it just the right amount of grip.

A natural match for anything hearty - slow-cooked meats, rich pasta, or even just a wedge of good cheese - it’s a proper, no-fuss McLaren Vale red that ticks all the right boxes.

"Wild black cherry, mulberry, cool raspberry, olive, tobacco leaf, toasted rye and warm bitumen… A tart but ripe berry profile on a mid-weight frame, finishing with sprightly vigour and flavour extension. No greenness in this cool-season Monte."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Matured in seasoned hogsheads, with 20% second-fill barrels. Monte is a late ripener, and in a cool year like '23, one might expect some greenness. Not here, with the season showing up in the agreeably tart – but ripe – berry profile and the sprightly finish. Wild black cherry, mulberry, cool raspberry, olive, tobacco leaf, toasted rye and warm bitumen play across a mid-weight canvas, finishing with real vigour and flavour extension." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

92 points - "Dark, inky, youthful and opaque in the glass. Aromas of plum, mulberry, spice, dried herbs, graphite and bramble. Fleshy, dark fruited, plush and generously flavoured. There’s plenty of plummy juiciness, dark chocolate and sweet spice, along with bright, snappy acidity and firm, textured tannins. Delicious." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

91 points - "I never quite know whether I like Montepulciano, or not, because I kind of bracket it in with Barbera, of which I’m not much of a fan.

Black fruit, cherry, a little nutty and spicy, with something of a steely/ozone top note. It’s medium-bodied, quite crisp in acidity, some black fruits, chocolate and hazelnut, with coffee grounds tannin, and bay leaf. It’s a brighter expression of Monty in this vintage, though still pretty good. Quite frisky." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Montepulciano was first planted at Coriole back in 2001. We love the variety for its rich intensity and lovely array of savoury characters to balance the dark cherry fruit. Montepulciano is late ripening and often the last variety we pick. We use fruit from both our Coriole and Willunga vineyards. At Coriole, the vines are grown on terra rossa which gives the wine a more structural element, whereas fruit from Willunga has richer flavour and generosity.

Coriole

Coriole is a McLaren Vale institution.

It's a winery with two sides. On one hand, they craft classic regional versions of Shiraz and Cabernet which are exemplary. On the other, they have been a trailblazer for emerging varieties (Italian varieties, in particular) in Australia.

Owner and winemaker, Mark Lloyd was one of the first in the country to experiment with Sangiovese and Fiano and has been hugely influential in bringing these varieties into the Australian wine zeitgeist.

Today, Mark's son Duncan has taken over the winemaking duties and his brother Peter as General Manager. The experimentation with emerging varieties continues under their guidance with Nero d'Avola, Negroamaro, and Piquepoul having come into the fold. Coriole never stands still. They are trailblazers who have had a huge impact on the changing face of modern Australian wine.
