Description

The Romas vineyard is Clarendon Hills’ flagship Grenache site - planted around 1920 on a steep, east-facing slope in the rockiest part of Blewitt Springs. These old bush vines sit in a mix of ironstone, quartz and shale, with barely any topsoil. Yields are low, the berries are tiny, and the flavours are unmistakable.

2023 brought a long, late season that allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. The grapes were hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented wild with a portion of whole berries. After pressing, the wine spent 18 months in seasoned French oak before being bottled on site without fining or filtration.

This is a more structured, mineral-driven style of Grenache - red and blue fruits, blood orange, florals and spice, all pulled tight by a line of crushed rock and firm tannin. The fruit feels deep and compact, but the palate stays nimble and precise. It’s not showy, but there’s a lot going on.

A serious, cellar-worthy wine from one of the great old vineyards of McLaren Vale.

“Roman Bratasiuk championed grenache before many but, with the newer revolution televised, the Clarendon Hills wines are seeing a second wave of influence. Fragrant and fine? No. The house stamp is there (so, please decant) but with less brood, more detail... A lot’s going on here, and this will live for a long time.”

“Perfumed, sophisticated and lively... Very well-made with a vibrant energy from a cooler vintage. Drink or hold.”

97 points - “Roman Bratasiuk championed grenache before many but, with the newer revolution televised, the Clarendon Hills wines are seeing a second wave of influence. Fragrant and fine? No. The house stamp is there (so, please decant) but with less brood, more detail. This is from the Blewitt Springs vineyard, planted mainly in the ‘40s, and is the most finessed of the ’23 grenache bottlings. It’s savoury in its delivery, with tart but concentrated dark red fruits, scented with souk spices, damask rose and licorice root. There’s a sinewiness to this, a compact between tannin and acid that puckers and draws flavours long. A lot’s going on here, and this will live for a long time.” - Marcus Ellis (Wine Companion)

97 points - “Perfumed, sophisticated and lively. Aromas of blue and black fruit with notes of pomegranate, plums and violets. The palate is seamlessly balanced with bright acidity and fine-tuned tannins, showing layers of graphite, iodine, boysenberries and spices. Very well-made with a vibrant energy from a cooler vintage. Drink or hold.” - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

Clarendon Hills

Founded by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990, Clarendon Hills helped redefine Australian Shiraz. From the start, Bratasiuk focused on old-vine, single-vineyard reds from the elevated northern edge of McLaren Vale - bottled by site, clone, and variety, without shortcuts.

The cult flagship is Astralis, sourced from 1920s bush vines in Blewitt Springs. Powerful, structured and built to age, it set a new standard for South Australian Shiraz. But across the full range - Brookman, Sandown, Liandra and more - Clarendon Hills maps the complexity of McLaren Vale’s terroir with precision.

These are bold, cellar-worthy reds shaped with care: confident oak, fine tannins, and a focus on site above all. Clarendon Hills remains one of the country’s most important single-vineyard producers.
