Description

This single-vineyard Grenache comes off a patch of dry-grown bush vines planted in 1945, right in the heart of Blewitt Springs. The vines sit on deep sand over ironstone and quartz, on a cool south-facing slope - low-yielding, gnarly, and consistent every year.

2023 brought a long, mild season and a late harvest, with pristine fruit and beautifully preserved acidity. The fruit was picked by hand, fermented wild with a portion of whole berries, and aged in seasoned French oak for 18 months. No fining, no filtration.

The wine is fragrant and finely structured - red cherry, raspberry, spice and a floral lift that feels native to this part of the Vale. There’s a mineral thread, a savoury edge, and tannins that feel more like texture than grip. It’s complex without being heavy, and carries its detail with ease.

A standout old-vine Grenache from one of the country’s most important sites.

“Fragrant, in a spicy way, fruits deep red and black, tar and a rugged, ferrous rockiness, with clove, black pepper, star anise, brown cardamom, red and purple florals and soused citrus peel. It’s not unusual here, but this really needs ample air to show its best.”

“Vibrant purple fruit with layers of blackberries, bitter chocolate, violets and raspberries on the nose... Poised and polished. Drink or hold.”

It’s not unusual here, but this really needs ample air to show its best. It has less heft than the Onkaparinga, but still plenty of power and structure, plus a supple viscosity across the palate. As said, air is needed, with floral notes filtering out and a greater sense of levity. Cellar for a couple of years to begin with or decant and stand for a half a day.” - Marcus Ellis (Wine Companion)

94 points - “Vibrant purple fruit with layers of blackberries, bitter chocolate, violets and raspberries on the nose. The medium-bodied palate shows refined tannins and balanced acidity that lead into a savory, herbal finish. Poised and polished. Drink or hold.” - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

Clarendon Hills

Founded by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990, Clarendon Hills helped redefine Australian Shiraz. From the start, Bratasiuk focused on old-vine, single-vineyard reds from the elevated northern edge of McLaren Vale - bottled by site, clone, and variety, without shortcuts.

The cult flagship is Astralis, sourced from 1920s bush vines in Blewitt Springs. Powerful, structured and built to age, it set a new standard for South Australian Shiraz. But across the full range - Brookman, Sandown, Liandra and more - Clarendon Hills maps the complexity of McLaren Vale’s terroir with precision.

These are bold, cellar-worthy reds shaped with care: confident oak, fine tannins, and a focus on site above all. Clarendon Hills remains one of the country’s most important single-vineyard producers.
