Description

Just a kilometre from Chatto’s home block at Isle, the Seven Inch vineyard could almost be its twin - but like any siblings, it has a voice all its own. Planted in 2007 and lovingly tended by Max and Sue Kitchell, this site has been part of the Chatto stable since 2014 and has become one of the Huon Valley’s most quietly compelling Pinot vineyards.

In the glass, the 2023 Seven Inch Pinot Noir is rich yet chiselled, marrying opulence and structure with the elegance we’ve come to expect from Jim Chatto. It’s a blend of four clones - 115, G5V15, D5V12, and 8104 - with just 12.5% whole bunch to add aromatic lift without overwhelming the wine’s natural grace. There’s a swirl of rose petals on the nose and a velvet touch of tannin through the finish.

Textural, poised and sumptuously detailed, this is a Chatto Pinot with plenty of charm and a core of quiet power.

"Struck-match tones over red cherry and plum fruits… complex, airy and lithe with spice, brambly tones, charcuterie and crushed stone. Porcelain palate presence."

"Dark cherries, rose petals, boysenberries and gun smoke… creamy texture with blackberries, orange peel and raspberries. Best from 2028."

96 points - “Sourced from the vineyard of Max and Sue Kitchell, neighbours of Jim and Daisy Chatto in Glaziers Bay in the Huon Valley. Light and bright in the glass with some wonderfully whiffy struck-match tones hovering over the red cherry and plum fruits beneath. I actually made a little ‘phwoar’ noise when I smelt this wine. Complex, airy and lithe; loaded with exotic spice, brambly tones, charcuterie, wildflowers and crushed stone. It’s drinking beautifully now with its porcelain palate presence and graceful line, but it will gain complexity over the medium term. Nice one, Jim.” - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - “Very bright, medium-full purple-red colour, the bouquet showing some smoky charcuterie reduction at first sniff, then a lovely sweet-fruited lushness on the mid-palate. There’s a wash of ripe, supple tannins adding to the attractively fleshy texture, the finish going quite long. The meatiness adds extra layers to a wine which is quite delicious.” - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

94 points - “Bright and reduced aromas of dark cherries, rose petals, boysenberries and gun smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and a creamy texture, giving notes of blackberries, orange peel and raspberries. A delicious and generous wine that will benefit from time in bottle and decanting when ready to drink. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.” - James Suckling (jamessuckling.com)

Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is revered as one of the finest winemakers currently working in Australia.

His recent reinvigoration at Mount Pleasant in the Hunter Valley has received phenomenal critical acclaim, as has his personal Tasmanian project, Chatto wines.

After purchasing a plot of land that Jim describes as "right on the edge of viticultural possibility", planting began in 2007.

In only a short amount of time, this site has produced some extraordinary wines and looks set to become one of the Apple Isle most prized viticultural assets.
