Description

There’s no mistaking Jim Chatto’s deft touch in this brooding, muscular expression of Coal River Valley Pinot Noir. Killara Farm is grown by Gill Christian and Todd Goebel at their Brinktop Road vineyard in Penna, a site that clearly has Jim excited - this is only the second single-vineyard release from this parcel, and it already feels like a keeper.

In true Chatto style, this is Pinot that balances strength with nuance. It’s a blend of three clones: MV6 bringing the spice and herbal lift, D2V4 (Pommard) offering dark muscle and depth, and D5V12 adding ripe red fruit. The resulting wine has layers for days - savoury, detailed, and packed with that unmistakable Coal River generosity.

The palate is full and grounded, yet there’s an underlying grace here that keeps everything poised. A few years in the cellar will only heighten its charm - but good luck waiting that long.

95 points
"Ripe macerated plum and cherry fruits, jasmine and citrus blossom, exotic spice and amaro… pure and expressive, savoury and wonderfully balanced."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points
"Savory aromas of wild blackberries, cedar and dried herbs… medium-bodied with dark cherries, mulberry and a hint of oceanic saltiness."
- James Suckling (jamessuckling.com)

95 points - “Single-vineyard pinot noir from the Coal River Valley ‘Killara Farm’ vineyard of Gillian Christian and Todd Goebel. Such a pretty-smelling wine. Ripe macerated plum and cherry fruits, flecked with high tones of jasmine and citrus blossom along with hints of exotic spice, amaro, a whiff of watermelon and earthen nuance. Pure and expressive with a distinctly composed air to its travel across the palate, finishing savoury, stony and wonderfully balanced.” - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - “Savory aromas of wild blackberries, cedar, cassia bark and dried herbs on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and focused acidity, giving notes of dark cherries, mulberry bush and dried rose petals with an oceanic saltiness. Nice balance and structure from 15% whole-cluster fermentation.” - James Suckling (jamessuckling.com)

91 points - “Dark cherry, dark chocolate orange, stalks and capsicum, quite a lot of spice and smoked meat. It’s a tangy wine, kind of bitter and amaro-laced, again that smoky reductive character, chalky/powdery tannin grip, with a smoky tea finish of solid length. I reckon it would be a better wine if the fruit was not obfuscated by so much winemaking, but then again, I’m a simple kind of fellow.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

91 points - “Bright, full purple-red colour and a quiet but sweet raspberry, red cherry aroma, the palate lean and slightly sinewy with a tight grip and a little astringency to close. This could open up with a bit more time in the bottle.” - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is revered as one of the finest winemakers currently working in Australia.

His recent reinvigoration at Mount Pleasant in the Hunter Valley has received phenomenal critical acclaim, as has his personal Tasmanian project, Chatto wines.

After purchasing a plot of land that Jim describes as "right on the edge of viticultural possibility", planting began in 2007.

In only a short amount of time, this site has produced some extraordinary wines and looks set to become one of the Apple Isle most prized viticultural assets.
