Description

Julian Castagna has been farming his Beechworth vineyard biodynamically since well before it was fashionable, and the wines have a cult following because of it. His Chardonnay is an exercise in restraint rather than power, and the 2023 is a lovely example of just that.

It's single-vineyard, BD-certified and entirely estate-grown, and this is only the third vintage made that way. The vines sit on shallow granitic soil up in the Beechworth hills. Oak is kept in check at around 30% new, and the alcohol comes in at a modest 13%.

There's a gorgeous perfume here, fennel and aniseed with a herbal hint, then lemon, white peach and a nutty, creamy side. It's fleshy but tightly held by brisk acidity, with a touch of reduction tucked in at the back rather than out front, which is exactly how Julian likes it. Long, supple and properly structured. Give it a decant now, or a year or two in the cellar and it'll really hit its stride.

An elegant Beechworth Chardonnay with a lot of character, from one of Victoria's great biodynamic growers.

96 points - "Julian Castagna is not chasing reduction. At least not as a theme for his Chardonnays, as he puts it, “I quite like a bit of a reduction at the back, but I don’t like it up front.” And this is where you find it. Full interview here. The perfume in this wine makes your mouth water. You’ll find teasing-the-appetite notes of baklava, crushed fennel, aniseed, tangled with a herbal note à la tarragon. Fleshy texture, with flavour evenly splashed and carried; pistachios and macadamias, creamy notes of vanilla and nutmeg. The reduction is in the back, indeed, and complements the wine rather than overtaking it. So much character in this wine." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

95 points - "A subtle elegance resides here. Nothing is too loud, nothing too soft, and it is definitely in no hurry. A decant or some swishes in the glass will allow a slow awakening of a wine that will reach its stride after one or two years. Aromas of dusty lemon, Red Delicious apple, citrus, melon, white peach, a light sprinkling of baking spices and background oak introduce a wine nicely refined and kitted out in brisk acidity. It has a gentle quality, and a little more time will allow the mealy creaminess, mineral earthiness and engaging spiciness to fully reveal and engage with that lovely fruit. All is set." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Deep yellow hue with a rich, spicy, nutty/toasty bouquet showing some development and great richness. A generous style without being broad or oaky. Powerful wine with a long finish. (The 3rd vintage of chardonnay made from all estate-grown fruit. Shallow granitic soil; 30% new oak.)" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Made from Single-Vineyard, BD-Certified Estate Grown Chardonnay, this is an exercise in restraint, not power. The wine is supple, long, structured and supremely elegant.

Castagna

Castagna helped establish Beechworth as a home for serious Australian wine, championing biodynamic farming, fragrant Syrah and Sangiovese along the way. Founded by Julian Castagna in the late 1990s, it remains a family operation, with son Adam now an integral part of the vineyard and winery.

The estate sits at around 500 metres in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, on decomposed granite over clay. Warm days ripen the fruit fully, while cool nights help retain the acidity that gives these wines their freshness and ability to age.

Certified organic and biodynamic, the vineyard is central to everything the family does. Vines are pruned by hand, yields are kept low and fruit is hand-picked, before fermentation with indigenous yeasts and patient maturation in the cellar.

Syrah and Sangiovese are particular strengths, combining concentrated fruit with perfume, savoury detail and fine tannins. These are the qualities we love about Castagna: distinctive Beechworth wines with plenty of flavour, satisfying texture and a proven capacity to develop in the cellar.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
