WINERY OF THE YEAR! - 2026 Halliday Wine Companion

Tallawanta Vineyard sits in the heart of Pokolbin and has been part of the Hunter’s story for over 100 years. Brokenwood has a long history with the site, and the single-vineyard Shiraz from here always shows a bit more muscle and depth compared to some of their other Hunter reds.

The 2023 season was cooler and later, which meant slower ripening and fruit that came in with beautiful balance. Winemaking was kept simple – hand-picking, small ferments and careful use of French oak – letting the vineyard’s character do the talking.

What you get is classic medium-bodied Hunter Shiraz with a little extra polish: bright red and dark fruit, savoury spice and fine tannins that give the wine length and presence without ever feeling heavy. It’s delicious now but has the structure to age for many years if you can wait.

Tallawanta is one of the Hunter’s great sites, and this 2023 release is a standout – proof of just how refined and world-class Hunter Shiraz can be when vineyard and vintage line up perfectly.

An impressive, long-living wine from a heritage vineyard planted in 1920. Mellow, inky, dark and mysterious, this is an utterly compelling and unique wine with a deep chasm of intensity and a serious, contemplative core. The explosion of flavour on the back of the palate is outstanding. The structural elements are impeccably balanced, with acidity playing a notable role. Although the wine is aged in 100% French oak, none of it is new, ensuring its influence is nuanced, gentle, savoury and refined.

A crunchy syrah with lightly chewy tannins and lots of blackberry, blueberry, mushroom and ink aromas. Touches of bark and meatiness. Medium-bodied with a lovely texture and balance. A thoughtful red. From 103-year-old vines. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Beautiful mid-density colour, with bright purple hues. Lifted dark berry fruits with some char from the French oak build on the nose. At almost 14% alcohol, the wine retains its medium-bodied weight, with ripe berry fruit and fine, long tannins carrying through to the finish. A classic medium weight Hunter Valley Shiraz that is a lovely drink as a young wine, and like all our Hunter Valley Shiraz, will age beautifully.

Winemaker Comments
The Tallawanta Vineyard was planted in 1920, on an East-facing slope on Thompsons Rd. It is one of the most celebrated single vineyard Shiraz Vineyards in the Hunter Valley and has been under Brokenwood’s careful management since 2014. A season with many similarities to 2021 but overall of higher quality. La Nina once again made for a cool, wet season, albeit tempered by consistent breeze, which kept the canopy dry and disease at bay. Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of November, with it being the wettest November on record. We ended up receiving 956mm for 2021. it was one of the latest harvests in the Hunter in many years. Thankfully, the sun came out, and the last of the Tallawanta Vineyard was picked on the 23rd of February, resulting in a fine, fragrant Shiraz. Handpicking this fruit has resulted in a shiraz full of finesse.

Food Pairing
Enjoy with pork, or lamb and rosemary sausages.

Production
Processing started with 3-4 day cold soaking and then 4-5 day ferment at 23-26C. The vineyard is on heavy clay similar to the Graveyard Vineyard with more stone on the top of the ridge, giving way to darker loam soil at the bottom of the hill. The oak regime for this wine is 100% French oak, with no new oak.

Drink
Drinking well now but will age gracefully.

Brokenwood

Brokenwood is one of the Hunter Valley’s great stories. What started back in 1970 as a weekend hobby for a couple of Sydney lawyers has grown into one of Australia’s most respected wineries, without ever losing that original sense of fun and adventure. From the beginning they set the standard for Hunter Semillon, a style they still lead the charge on today.

These days Chief Winemaker Stuart Hordern carries the torch, crafting brilliant Hunter classics and also drawing on fruit from some of the country’s best regions. Think plush McLaren Vale Shiraz, elegant Victorian Chardonnay, and powerful Beechworth Cabernet, all made with the same Brokenwood touch.

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz has long been one of Australia’s most collectable reds, but the wines across the range share a common thread: purity, balance and a real sense of place. At the same time, the team here has always kept things down-to-earth. They’re serious about sustainability and quality, but never take themselves too seriously.

Brokenwood has grown up, but it still carries the spark of those early days. If you want a producer that combines Hunter Valley history with a modern, generous spirit, you’ve found it.
