Description

You can’t really have a McLaren Vale conversation without talking Shiraz, but Brad Hickey always manages to spin it his own way. This 2023 release comes straight off the organic Omensetter vineyard - 25-year-old vines digging deep into that heavy red clay and limestone. It was a cooler vintage in the Vale with some tricky conditions, which meant Brad had to be super selective with the fruit, but the result is something pretty special.

In the winery, he’s gone for about 20% whole bunches, fermented wild in open fermenters before being gently basket pressed. It spent a good 20 months in French hogsheads, which has softened everything down beautifully.

What lands in the glass is deep and brooding but far from heavy. It’s got this wicked savoury edge - think black plum and smoked chorizo - alongside a kick of blood orange zest that really gives it life.

It feels generous but keeps its cool, walking a perfect line between rich old-school Vale styles and a fresher, more modern vibe.

Made from 25 year old shiraz vines grown at the Organic Brash Higgins’ estate Omensetter Vineyard. 2023 in the Vale was a cool year with some tricky growing conditions. Vinted from hand selected fruit, partially direct pressed, the 2023 SHZ was comprised of 20% whole bunch fruit, and sent to open two ton fermenters for 3 weeks. Wild yeast did their job and then it all was gently basket pressed and sent to a mix of 2-10 year older French hogsheads for 20 months.

‘Translucent purple. The nose of the Brash SHZ is brooding with black plums, bergamont, blood orange zest, nutmeg and liquorice. There’s an earthy note that is typical of Omensetter Vineyard’s red clay. The palate is generous, berried and vibrant, the tannins delicate. The wine finishes with dark berry and spice notes.’ – Brad Hickey, Vinitor, 9 Sept 2025.

Review:
2021 SHZ Shiraz Estate- “An address that does its very best to knock any obvious sweet fruit from its wines. A trait that I appreciate. Here, achieved with a synthesis of reduction, an attenuated natural ferment and a good douse of whole-bunch spice, with a wee dab of rusticity. Fine tannins, a gritty carapace lathered with spice, to boot. From organically grown grapes.” 93 pts, Ned Goodwin, MW, JamesSuckling.com

Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.
