Description

Brash Higgins’ R/SM is an ode to McLaren Vale’s coastal whites, blending Riesling (70%) and Semillon (30%) in a dry-grown, single-vineyard field blend from a tiny half-acre block in Blewitt Springs. Planted in 1975 by a German farmer, these two varieties ripen side by side, are picked together, spend a couple of days on skins, and co-ferment wild in old French barriques - resulting in a wine of true place and character.

The 2023 vintage shows all the crystalline citrus energy of Riesling, cut through with the lemony flesh and savoury depth of Semillon. There’s an almost saline, margarita-like freshness, making it a natural fit for seafood - oysters, salt and pepper squid, King George whiting. The texture, shaped by 12 months in seasoned oak and a single steel barrel, adds depth and complexity without weighing it down.

Bright, zippy, and packed with coastal charm, this is effortless summer drinking with serious pedigree. Only 70 dozen made - don’t miss it.

"Intensely savoury, full of flavour and textural plump, trimmed in with a feathery phenolic grip and fine line of acidity. Candied lime pith, green apple tarte Tatin, stone fruit kernel, fennel frond, pine needle, fresh mint and an iodine-tinged oyster-like ferrous-ity. It’s a tussle – energetic, viscous and flavourful – all tumbling out in an oceanic dump of salinity with a positive citrus-pith bitterness. Needs a little time, but it’s compelling stuff."

93 points - "Riesling and semillon in a beautiful alliance. This has some great savouriness and salty notes going on. Things me likes in whites. Scents and flavours of brine, cashew, green almond, ginger, lime, cumquat, dill and white pepper. Exotic things, an edginess to the wine, but it holds its own, shows off just shy of medium weight concentration, a cool, pleasingly bitter finish too. Compact and curiosity triggering wine. It has something going on, for sure. Refreshment factor is high too. Some will balk perhaps at the peaky acidity, but it fits for me. Just expect a somewhat edgy wine. Dive in." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Why isn't this blend seen more often

Don't think I've ever seen a riesling semillon blend before but have had a lot of their other wines and never been disappointed. Make sure you don't chill this too much - should be cool not cold or you'll lose most of what makes it great!

Interesting. Delicious

I’ve bought a few vintages of this wine and it’s always been great. 2020 is the best to date.

A ‘field blend’ is an ensemble of different grapes from one vineyard block that are picked on the same day and fermented together, making a unique wine of place or a ‘vin de terroir’. Our version is from a sandy, elevated site along the far eastern foothills of the Blewitt Springs sub-region in McLaren Vale. Here a half acre of Riesling (70%) and Semillon (30%), planted in 1975 by a German farmer, grow cheek by jowl. Picked on the same day, these unusual bedmates spend a couple days on skins together before being basket pressed then co-fermented wild in trusty French barriques. This bright white wine has all the emerald exuberance of Riesling cut with the lemony flesh of Semillon. Great summer drinking, and a riot with oysters, we are proud that this wine tastes like a true coastal white; its origins a mere 20 km from the Gulf of St. Vincent.

“Lovely deeper yellow in hue. All the emerald exuberance of Riesling cut by the lemony flesh of Semillon. A maragrita in the glass, a true ocean wine, as well. Bring on the oysters, salt and pepper squid and King George whiting.” Brad Hickey, Vinitor, September 19, 2024

Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
