Description

These days under the stewardship of Jean-Marie Fourrier and the Burgundy-based team that took over from founder Phillip Jones, Bass Phillip continues to set the bar for Australian Pinot Noir. The Reserve remains the pinnacle of the estate’s work – drawn from the original 1979 Leongatha plantings, cropped at tiny yields and farmed organically to capture every ounce of site character.

The 2023 vintage was long and cool, a perfect year for slow, even ripening. The fruit was handled with Fourrier’s trademark precision – wild fermentation, gentle extraction, gravity transfer, and maturation in fine-grain French oak. The focus is purity and balance rather than power.

The wine is seamless and deeply expressive. Dark cherry, rose petal, and spice unfold over a silken palate that feels both delicate and grounded. The tannins are fine but assertive, the acidity bright and cleansing. It’s elegant, layered and built for the long haul – and further evidence to the claim of this being Australia's premier Pinot Noir.

There have been many great vintages of the Reserve but I can’t remember one having such clarity and precision, matched to a brightness of fruit. So, for me, the finest to date. What’s also pleasing is the clear delineation from the estate up to this, the flagship. It commands your attention yet it’s also welcoming and open knit. There’s a lot to unpack yet the package is complete; very spicy, with florals and sweet fruit, cedar, menthol, black cherries and kirsch. It ebbs and flows with aromas and flavours and filagree tannins (lots of them) with fine acidity all slinking across the fuller-bodied palate. There’s a suppleness that off-sets its latent power. Wow, what a wine! Unequivocally the benchmark.

Deep colour with a good tint of purple in the meniscus; the aromas are reserved and low-key, with suggestions of forest-floor, dried herbs, humus and leaf-litter. The palate explodes with a mass of concentrated flavour and tannin, a full-bodied pinot with impressive tannin structure well matched to the powerful flavour. A majestic pinot noir of enormous length that is still emerging from its shell: at least another year is suggested before opening it. This has wow factor!

Bass Phillip

Phillip Jones founded Bass Phillip back in 1979 and in the intervening years built a deserved reputation as one of Australia's best producers of Pinot Noir. For decades Jones farmed his Gippsland plot with adherence to organic and biodynamic farming, the meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard yielding some of Australia’s truly world class wines.

So, it was only fitting that one of France's greatest Pinot Noir producers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, should take on the winemaking mantle as Phillip eased into retirement.

These are wines of power, personality and persistence, and need a place in every true collector's cellar. Bass Phillip is arguably some of Australia's most important benchmarks for Pinot Noir and this new chapter of their story is going to be very exciting to watch unfold.
