Description

This Cabernet Franc comes from Brodie Smith’s vineyard in Polish Hill River, now certified organic and in great shape. The fruit was picked by hand, destemmed and crushed, then fermented cool in concrete for two weeks before heading into old oak for nine months.

It’s mid-weight and fresh, with red berry fruit, subtle herbs, and a gentle line of spice. No oak flavour to speak of, just clean, expressive fruit and a bit of texture from time on skins.

This is one of those wines that doesn’t need to announce itself. Easy to like, no excess, and plenty of energy. A great take on Clare Valley Franc that feels both relaxed and well-made.

"A little haze to texture, some crunch in flavour, a bright, blood orange tang in the freshness zone. It needs time to flesh out to get more serious, and it should mature well, though drinking now is all about joy and freshness."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"A tangy and highly spiced expression of Cabernet Franc here... Orange peel and pepper in the aftertaste. Frisky and spicy. Fine-boned and engaging. You have to like them on the cusp, that frisson and tang maybe more appealing to some than others, though I do like the wine."

93 points - "Organically grown fruit from the Smith family vineyard in Polish Hill. A juicy, bright and genial red of popping red berry fruitiness, minty herbal notes, black pepper, a touch of rhubarb and some light, woody spice notes. It needs time to flesh out to get more serious, and it should mature well, though drinking now is all about joy and freshness." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

91 points - "A tangy and highly spiced expression of Cabernet Franc here. A garam marsala affair with emphasis on black pepper and cardamom, strawberry and raspberry, rhubarb, a little mint and green tea, red capsicum. It’s light to medium-bodied, dusty and peppery in tannin, kind of marginal in terms of ripeness, but that spice and the cool ‘mineral’ feel it has is quite lovely all the same. Orange peel and pepper in the aftertaste. Frisky and spicy. Fine-boned and engaging. You have to like them on the cusp, that frisson and tang maybe more appealing to some than others, though I do like the wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
