Description

The Yeringberg Chardonnay straddles the magic sweet-spot between a bold, traditional toasty Chardonnay and the modern fresher styles in the variety that the Yarra Valley has become known for.

Hand-picked from hillside blocks that balance ripeness with cool-climate freshness, the fruit is whole-bunch-pressed and fermented in French oak barrels (30% new). Lees stirring adds that unmistakable creamy texture, while the cool 2022 vintage ensured the wine retained a fine mineral edge.

Lifted aromas of white peach, lemon zest, and roasted almond lead into a palate that’s both generous and precise. Layers of stone fruit, lemon curd, and oak spice unfold, with a flinty streak and a long, clean finish tying it all together.

It's a classic style of Chardonnay - one for traditionalists and contemporary wine lovers alike.

"A combination of natural and inoculated ferments, then racked to 25% new oak with 25% mlf. A bright green gold. Attractive scents of ripe stone fruits, lemon confiture, honey and hazelnuts that are echoed on the flavourful, silky, gently viscous and long palate. At the more hedonistic end of the Yarra chardonnay spectrum and a delicious wine to drink now and over the next three to five years."

Yeringberg Chardonnay is a single-vineyard wine made from vines planted in 1974 and 1981. A low-yielding, high-quality vintage produced excellent, intense wines in small quantities.

Picked on March 4 and bottled in February 2023, the handpicked grapes were in exceptional condition. They were carefully sorted, crushed, and pressed. The juice was settled overnight in a tank, then racked to barrels—French oak hogsheads, 25% new and the remainder older. Malolactic fermentation occurred in the new barrel during the winter and spring. The wine remained on its yeast lees and was stirred weekly until July, then fortnightly until November.

Our 2022 Chardonnay has an extra element of precision, power, and drive that the very best seasons bring to the fore. Restrained aromas of nectarine, citrus blossom, and flint evolve into richer notes of white peach, honey, and roasted nuts. There’s generosity and a touch of richness within a poised, powerful, and complex palate. – Sandra De Pury

Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."
