Description

The late John Vickery left an indelible mark on Australian wine, and this Reserve Watervale Riesling stands as a fitting tribute to his legacy. Crafted from select Clare Valley parcels in an outstanding vintage, it captures the precision and purity that defined Vickery’s work over six decades.

2022 was a cool, measured year in Watervale – ideal conditions for Riesling. Fruit was picked early for freshness, then gently pressed and cold-fermented to preserve aromatics. The result is beautifully focused – lime, citrus blossom and bath salts on the nose, with a taut, dry palate that pulses with energy.

This is a wine built for the long haul, and it will age with grace for well over a decade. But even now, the balance is spot-on. It’s bright, pure, and a quiet reminder of just how much John Vickery shaped the style.

"It travels precisely on rails of high-tensile, minerally acidity, finishing stony, dry and with great drive and vitality. Jeez, it's great drinking."
- Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is so well balanced, with vibrant acidity, focus and drive, not to mention serious length. Gosh, this is superb stuff. Long may the rest of the world ignore it."
- Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

"A wine that is really attractive drinking now, but will also cellar beautifully for many years to come."
- Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

"Drink now or let it rest for another decade in the back of your cellar for a showstopper later in life."
- Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "John Vickery sadly passed away a couple of years ago, and today winemaker Keeda Zilm is doing a stellar job as custodian of his legacy. This riesling is a crystalline, steely singularity of the grape variety. Characters of freshly squeezed limes, green apple sorbet and grapefruit are joined by tones of crushed stone, lemongrass, lime zest, Christmas lily and makrut lime. It travels precisely on rails of high-tensile, minerally acidity, finishing stony, dry and with great drive and vitality. Jeez, it's great drinking." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Stunning stuff from the team which has picked up the baton from our greatest Riesling producer, John Vickery. From the Watervale sub-region in the Clare Valley, this is fractionally more gentle than its sibling from the Eden Valley, but exhibits just as much focus and length. From a stellar vintage, it reveals everything we love about great Aussie Riesling. Sure, the rest of the world does not understand why we make Riesling like that, as opposed to the Germanic and Alsatian efforts, but that just means all the more for us. A pale lemon hue, the room immediately filled with gorgeous Riesling aromatics – spices, florals, herbs, citrus and river stones. Grapefruit, lemon curd and chalky notes emerged and there is a steely backing. This is so well balanced, with vibrant acidity, focus and drive, not to mention serious length. Gosh, this is superb stuff. Long may the rest of the world ignore it. Fifteen to twenty years ahead of it and it goes without saying that this is criminally undervalued." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "Pale straw, bright, lively and vibrant in the glass. Lifted and pretty aromas of citrus pith, lemon curd, mineral, white lily, jasmine and just-ripe white stone fruit. Juicy, mouth-filling, with plenty of pithy and crunchy lemony acidity, a touch of toast and lovely length and drive. A wine that is really attractive drinking now, but will also cellar beautifully for many years to come." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

95 points - "Fluorescent hues of emerald feijoas, golden kiwi and juicy limes. A plume of powdery talc and star jasmine. There is ease and grace here with a vintage that had the same effect of growers, thankfully. A radiant wine with the intensity of lime cordial and flow of a trickling river stream. Far too easy to enjoy, it will disappear before your eyes. The ripeness of fruit is spot on and would be highlighted by piquant goats cheese and fava bean salad. Drink now or let it rest for another decade in the back of your cellar for a showstopper later in life." - Shanteh Wale (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "This is excellent! Keeda Zilm is making all the right moves here in the late John Vickery's honour with this Vickery Reserve Watervale Riesling.
Sourced from the Koerner G6 Block planted in 2001, the energy and fluency are thrilling. A wine with a long future, the balance and shape at this early stage certainly support that argument.

Lemons, lemon juice and a lemon cordial concentration, the flicker of fennel and rosemary sprig sit in the background. The longer it sits, the more lime zest and Bickfords lime cordial shuffle there way forward. The mid-palate seizes up with a talc-like texture but that tightly held noose is the coil we patiently wait to unravel. Hold this and you'll be grinning from ear to ear. Drink to ten years+." - Steve Lescynski (Q Wine)

94 points - "Only 125 dozen were made. This is from the Koerner G6 vineyard in the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley. Riesling heartland. Release date isn’t until October 2025.

In flavour terms there are no real signs of development, yet, but this has softened fractionally, and combined with its excellent intensity of fruit: it’s a beauty, for both drinking (next summer) and for cellaring. Spice, lime, lemon rind, blossomy characters and a leaf note, not quite kaffir but just that extra something. Texturally this wine is excellent too: there’s no ‘grip’ but the flavours feel their way through the palate." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The Vickery Reserves are the jewel in the crown. Crafted only in the best vintages, winemaker Keeda selects the single best site from our Watervale growers, looking for fruit that shows exceptional purity and the ability to age.

Made in the unique John Vickery way, these wines are then cellared for three years and released on October 31st; what would have been John Vickery’s birthday. They’re a celebration of Riesling’s longevity and the delight that is aged Riesling. They can be enjoyed on release, but will reward patience, with a cellar life of twenty years. This is a dry Riesling, made in very small quantities and is vegan friendly.
